Orphan Chimpanzees Successfully Released Into the Wild 2 years ago and are doing great


Six males and six females between eight and 20 years old were released in June 2008. The release was the first of its kind to use VHF-GPS store-on-board ARGOS tracking collars to monitor the progress of the chimpanzees. The ARGOS system emits GPS points to satellites downloadable via the internet. It is also only the second time that rehabilitated chimpanzees have been released back into the wild in an area where other wild chimpanzees live.

Dr Tatyana Humle from the University of Kent is the scientific advisor to the project, which is being carried out by the Chimpanzee Conservation Centre in the Haut Niger National Park, Guinea, West Africa. This centre is one of 14 Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA)-accredited sanctuaries caring for chimpanzee victims of the pet and bush meat trade.

Six males and six females between eight and 20 years old were released in June 2008. Over two years after the release, nine chimpanzees remain free-living with two males and three females forming a group at the original release site. Two of these females gave birth to healthy offspring and another female successfully integrated into a wild chimpanzee community.

The release presented a number of challenges for researchers including finding a suitable release area, assessing its overlap with the home range of other wild chimpanzees to minimize competition and the risk of aggression, and ensuring the chimpanzees' ability to survive independently of human assistance.

The GPS points stored on the collars allowed researchers to monitor the chimpanzees' behaviour including their habitat use, day travel range and association patterns. The ARGOS system also facilitated several rescue missions to retrieve chimpanzees when they strayed too far from the protected release site.

The release project has brought significant conservation benefits to the local area. Environmental education and awareness raising programs have been established in and around the park, illegal logging activities have stalled and illegal hunting and fishing activities have been reduced.

Other sanctuaries and conservation centres are set to benefit significantly from the project's pioneering use of new technology.

Dr Humle, from the University's School of Anthropology and Conservation, said: 'This release demonstrates that under special circumstances the release of wild-born adult chimpanzees of both sexes is a viable strategy, which can also function as an effective conservation tool.

'The lessons learnt and the experience gained so far will benefit other sanctuaries that are also considering the option of releasing suitable candidates in the future. We still have much to learn about how rehabilitation, pre- and post-release procedures, and monitoring protocols impact release success. We can only hope that increased collaboration among academics, conservationists and sanctuaries will help bridge these gaps.'

A chimpanzee that survives the physical and emotional trauma of capture can take years to recover

A new study, published in the International Journal of Primatology, examines 11 Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) member facilities, predicting their carrying capacity for chimpanzees and provides a roadmap for long term resource, infrastructure and financial planning.

Lead author Lisa Faust, PhD a research biologist with Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo said, "The most sobering part of this study is realizing that most of these institutions already report being at capacity or close to capacity, and yet on average the group of sanctuaries are collectively faced with accepting 56 new chimpanzee arrivals every year, most of them under the age of two to three years old. Because chimpanzees are long-lived, this means that most of the sanctuaries will need to sustain or increase their current size, because they will continue to accept new arrivals as part of their commitment to chimpanzee welfare and law enforcement."

Chimpanzees are an endangered species, and while poaching is illegal it remains a major problem threatening their continued survival.
"PASA sanctuaries play a vital role in helping rescue and rehabilitate chimpanzees and other endangered primates, and that is our main objective," said Doug Cress, executive director of PASA. "But it's easy to get caught up in the day to day fight for survival and lose perspective. This study is so important because it allows us to step back and see where we'll be in the coming years and decades and to plan accordingly. Population modeling on this level is a wonderful tool."

But PASA member sanctuaries accept that long-term commitment, even if the only possible alternative to lifetime care -- reintroduction, the physical return of the chimpanzees back to the forest -- is a difficult and relatively new endeavor.

Chimpanzee reintroduction projects currently underway at PASA sanctuaries in Congo and Guinea have put more than 50 chimpanzees back into the wild, and three Cameroon sanctuaries are preparing to double that number through reintroduction programs in the next few years. But the cost, which can easily double a sanctuary's budget, is just one of the many obstacles to more widespread reintroduction.

Man caught for trying to smuggle a baby chimpanzee

Although great that they caught this guy before the baby chimp could be sold, the saddest part of this is that the mother was probably killed to get this baby and now this baby has no mom and mom doesn't have a life. All for the sake of money!!!!!! So sad... Just the thought that being rich over the compassion for the Primates makes me sick!!!! Hope he rots in jail forever because no doubt he took someone elses life.

Conservationists are calling for worldwide action to stop the growing trade in endangered primates being smuggled out of Africa by criminal gangs alongside drugs and arms, writes Asha Tanna.

The Pan-African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) - a non-profit organisation that supports sanctuaries across the continent - says the situation is "critical" to all endangered species, because dollar for dollar it's more profitable than some drug trafficking.

"It's nothing small, these gangs are well organised and they're fast," said PASA's executive director, Doug Cress.

"From start to finish a deal can be done and the order delivered in less than a week. If they've already got away with loading drugs and automatic weapons onto an airplane, then to throw in leopard skins and crates stuffed with live baby chimpanzees - it's worth their while."


















The man pictured here was investigated by the Last Great Ape Organisation (LAGA) - a wildlife law enforcement group - and jailed for three years for trying to smuggle a baby chimpanzee as well as four sacks of drugs containing 50kg of marijuana and cocaine in the back of his car out of Cameroon, en route to Nigeria.

According to conservationists, a baby gorilla can fetch up to £40,000 on the black-market.

Law enforcement agencies say they have identified certain trade routes through Africa which are being exploited because cross-border patrols are lax and the punishment for wildlife crime is lenient.

"Mobile phones and the internet have made it easy for people to communicate and they can create quite a grab bag of things," said Doug Cress.

"Prosecutions in parts of Africa...are difficult to uphold and some of these known traffickers are untouchable because they can bribe their way out of a situation."

PASA says endangered primates are usually pre-ordered from places like the Middle East, Asia and Eastern Europe where they end up either as exotic pets or put on show in zoos. The animals are increasingly being smuggled through Alexandria or Sharm El Sheik in Egypt - either from Cameroon via Nigeria or from Kenya via Sudan.

All endangered animals being trafficked are supposed to be protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Some crates seized by investigators have also revealed an increase in animal skins, ivory, rhino horns and various body parts for trophies.

Earlier this year, five people were arrested in Gabon, West Africa, following the largest confiscation of great ape body parts in the last ten years. The parts found included the head and hands of a gorilla, along with 12 chimpanzee heads and 30 chimpanzee hands.

Local African police, Interpol, LAGA and the World Customs Organization (WCO) have been working in conjunction with PASA to intercept wildlife smugglers to try to prosecute them.

Ofir Drori, director of LAGA said: "The problem conservation faces is corruption and it can be found in government officials, magistrates and police. That is the number one obstacle and we need to fight it.

"Bribing attempts are documented in 85 per cent of our field arrest operations, and 80 per cent of all court cases within the legal system. The only way to stop criminals, is to put them in jail.

"CITES is a tool that only works when there are collaborative governments. The problem is some governments don't want to follow the rules."

Following the recent political turmoil in Egypt, there's been no response from the authorities there to requests for comments on the smuggling allegations.

Lack of training

A spokesman for the WCO, Grant Bushby, said that many customs administrations in Africa suffered from a lack of awareness, training, equipment and inter-agency cooperation "which impacts negatively on effective enforcement at borders".

"Corruption too has paralysed enforcement efforts," he added.

PASA claims that Africa's ties with some international trading partners mean officials will look the other way at border checks; and say many of the illegal exchanges at African airports are done on the tarmac.

If criminals are successfully intercepted, conservationists say the animals are often confiscated and the offenders are allowed to walk away with just a warning. Those who do end up in jail will often receive a more lenient sentence for wildlife trafficking than for drugs or arms offences, so there's a temptation to re-offend.

PASA believes all chimpanzees and gorillas being smuggled out of Africa have been captured in the wild. It has written to CITES to investigate.

The head of enforcement for CITES, John Sellar said: "We are not sitting back and twiddling our thumbs. CITES has one officer to look at wildlife enforcement globally. Historically we have known that Egypt has traded in live primates and we have since worked very closely with the authorities to address this problem.

"The trade in great apes is very serious because of the detrimental impact to their populations; this is very much on our radar. If we find that a country is not complying we will issue sanctions to cease trading with them. Financially it has little significance, it's more international embarrassment. CITES is not a law enforcement agency, any hard evidence we receive is passed onto the authorities to investigate."

LAGA says it is starting to see some positive results, but preventing primate trafficking continues to be an on-going battle.

Chimpanzee Study Sheds Light on Natural History of HIV

ALBANY, N.Y. (March 16, 2011) -- A University at Albany scientist's research in African chimpanzee populations may provide new insights into the natural history of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVcpz), and the origins of HIV-AIDS.

In the cover article of the March 22nd issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, research by UAlbany biologist Mary Katherine Gonder and colleagues examines genetic data from one of the largest samples of chimpanzees to date. The sample originated from the west African nation of Cameroon, home to two chimpanzee subspecies: the central African chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) and the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee (P. t. ellioti) which occupies the Gulf of Guinea biodiversity hotspot in Nigeria and Cameroon.

The study showed that the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee constitutes a population exhibiting reproductive and genetic distinctiveness that clearly separates it from other chimpanzee subspecies.

Cameroon, said Gonder, is important in understanding the natural history of HIV-AIDS. Simian immunodeficiency virus found in central African chimpanzees from southern Cameroon is the likely progenitor of HIV-1 groups M and N. However, SIVcpz does not appear to occur naturally in the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee, although the current sample of chimpanzees from this region tested to date remains small. The reasons the Nigeria-Cameron chimpanzee is not naturally infected with SIVcpz remain unclear, but could be explained by a lack of breeding between Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzees and central African chimpanzees, extinctions of local chimpanzee communities from a simian AIDS-like syndrome associated with SIVcpz infection, natural resistance to SIVcpz infection, or combinations of these factors.

The research has broad implications for many branches of science and conservation practice. The research found that central and east Africa chimpanzees share most of their genetic history, despite having been thought by scientists, for nearly 100 years, to be very different from each other. According to the research, central and east African chimpanzees have stopped exchanging genes only relatively recently.

"What is revealing," said Gonder, "is how different the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee is from all other chimpanzees. This forced us to reexamine and to reinterpret how chimpanzee populations are structured in other regions of Africa. Overall, our study provides a new model for interpreting chimpanzee population structure, which may have implications for understanding why SIVcpz occurs at a high prevalence in chimpanzees across equatorial Africa but is absent in Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzees."
Gonder's research is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

African Sanctuaries take in an average of 56 baby Chimpanzees a year!!!!

When adults are killed for meat the surviving infants are often offered for sale as pets, and those that get confiscated by law enforcement are taken to sanctuaries for care.

"Reintroducing primates is not simple," Cress explained. "Deforestation and poaching make many areas unsuitable for reintroduction, and human encroachment has resulted in communities living in many of the national parks and protected areas. Also, it can be difficult to build a social group of chimpanzees that is physically and emotionally strong enough to survive a reintroduction. That's why the number of released animals remains relatively small compared to the number of orphans in need of care. Lifetime care in sanctuaries is the most frequent option for orphaned primates."

Chimpanzees can live up to 50 -- 60 years, so the commitment for lifetime care is substantial.

The study analyzed historic demographic patterns and projected future population dynamics of these select sanctuaries which housed (at that time) 760 chimpanzees. The median age was 9 years old, with 76 percent of the population being less than 15 years.

Lincoln Park Zoo chimpanzee behavioral researcher Steve Ross, PhD, co-author on the research, explained that as chimpanzees age and reach sexual maturity, group dynamics shift, making social structure an important component for future management plans for PASA sanctuaries.

"Older chimpanzees can be subject to aggression and social disharmony, especially in large groups," he explained. "This could be further exacerbated by the influx of adolescents, so managing group sizes and dynamics will be crucial for these sanctuaries."

"We found there to be an exponential relationship between population size and resource need because groups sizes cannot grow indefinitely," explained Faust. "Our goal with this research is to provide PASA with a road map for the potential future management challenges they may face. It should help long-term planning and increase their ability to be stewards for the apes they take in and advocates for those they work to protect in the wild."

Chimpanzee meat is for sale in restaurants and market stalls in Britain

... it has emerged.

Trading standards officials uncovered the illegal bushmeat from the endangered species whilst testing samples believed to be seized from vendors in the Midlands.

The meat, which can cost more than £20 a kilogram, is part of a lucrative black market trade that experts describe as ‘rife’ in Europe.

Last year, the first research on the import of bushmeat into Europe found over 270 tonnes passing through the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris alone.

The chimpanzee meat is understood to have been discovered following raids by trading standards in the Midlands.

A Government whistleblower revealed: ‘It is well known this practice is underway in the region but I was shocked to discover the meat that was tested was once a chimpanzee.

‘Dubious meat is often tested, and has turned out to be things like rats and vermin in the past – but chimpanzee is unbelievable.’

It is not known how the bushmeat arrived in the Midlands, but experts believe it was probably flown into the country from Africa, possibly concealed in personal luggage.

Dr Marcus Rowcliffe, research fellow at the Zoological Society of London and an expert on the trade, said at least five tonnes of bushmeat arrives in Europe every week to be distributed across the continent.

He said: ‘I’m not at all surprised that bushmeat is on sale in the Midlands because we know the trade is going on in the UK and that there is a regular flow of smuggled meat into the country.

"HOW would you like to fly to the Central African Republic in a Hercules aircraft, rescue chimpanzees, distribute mozzie nets with Kingsley Holgate and rub shoulders with Jonty Rhodes?"

That was the question put to me by Lesley Sutton, Land Rover's media manager, two weeks earlier, and was why I was spending this particular dawn shaking and rattling down the runway at Waterkloof Air Force Base, en route to Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, via Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

It was a nervous group of adventurers that clung to their nylon webbing seats that morning, apprehensive of everything, from the destination to the flight, to the lack of toilets on the flight and the lack of information we'd been given.

But the rattles soon changed from alarming to comforting and in no time at all people were strolling around, sharing snacks and getting to know one another. Jonty, spotting a gap, climbed into the driver's seat of the Land Rover Discovery4 that we were flying up for Kingsley, and promptly fell asleep in surreal comfort, surrounded by mosquito nets.

The Lockheed C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft was on a routine mission to ferry supplies from South Africa to troops based in the DRC and the Central African Republic (CAR). That explained the military supplies and the mail. The civilians and their kit, though, were part of a different plot.

Our humanitarian mission was piggybacking on theirs. For years Chris Thorpe has been working with Africa's modern explorer, the man with the beard and the passion for Africa, Kingsley Holgate. Under the banner of United Against Malaria, Chris has taken it upon himself to join Kingsley in combating malaria, using his networks and his business savvy to generate funds for mosquito nets, which Kingsley distributes on his adventures. We would be meeting up with Kingsley and his crew in Bangui, the capital of the CAR, on their latest expedition.

That explains the Discovery packed with mozzie nets. But the cage?

The centre of Africa is also the centre of the bushmeat trade, where wild animals, including apes, are hunted or trapped and then sold in markets. Another threat to Africa's apes is the entertainment industry - hotel and bar owners use chimpanzees as drawcards for their establishments, teaching them tricks to entertain the patrons. Well, we were going to break out a few of those chimps.

After six hours of trying to sleep, trying to read, trying to look out of the windows and trying to make small talk above the clamour of the engines, our plane stoops onto the Kinshasa runway in the DRC. The cargo ramp begins to lower before we're even stopped, and in pours the syrupy air of the equator.

We step onto the tarmac, only to be told by soldiers with AK-47 not to venture too far from the plane. We loiter under the wing, a line of do-gooders in a stripe of shade. Then the news arrives that the President is about to land. More guns arrive, and we are ushered inside the shabby airport. No one is allowed anywhere near the runway while the First Presidential Jet lands, and, to make sure of it, a bakkie load of troops is dropped off to line the tarmac. Thirty minutes later the jet swoops past, and we can escape back to our plane.

Bangui, the capital city of the CAR, lazes next to the Ubangi River which stretches out to the Congo and makes the biggest of our own rivers look like a storm-water drain. And the Bangui is just a tributary of the Congo River.

The airport is less impressive and, after taxiing to a stop, we are stuck there for a while. Luckily we are able to retire to the VIP lounge, where we are greeted by Kingsley and his wife Gill, drink a cold beer and watch the air-con being worked on.

The hold-up is our accommodation - it transpires that the CAR is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its independence two days later, and President François Bozizé has handed our hotel rooms over to his mates who will be dropping in for the occasion. Such is life.

So instead of a leisurely cruise around the dusk attractions of Bangui, a city where the French influence doesn't seem to have got much past baguettes and the language, we bus over to the South African National Defence Force base to regroup and plan our next move.

Our pilot, Major Gareth Gourlie, is in charge and makes an executive decision, which is that we should neither separate, nor drive around too much after dark. We submit - after all, this is a country that's had more coups than a dovecote. All it means is a night or two on mattresses on the floor of the base - things could definitely be worse.

Just after 4am we're up. Photojournalist Jacques Marais and I have organised a tour guide - Captain Allen Souter, 22 years in the defence force and second in charge of the SA troops based in the CAR. A useful chap to have around in a tight spot, then.

Our first stop is the banks of the Bangui River, as the sun's alchemy turns the brown waters gold. Life revolves around the river and the pirogues, and even now the waters are busy with fisherman and ferries, while the shores are beginning to stir with food vendors and nets being pulled in. We drift along, trying to blend into the background, but tourists are a rarity in the CAR and everyone wants their picture taken.

Having done that, Alan takes us up to a viewpoint overlooking the city, at the foot of a Hollywood-style sign - "Bangui la Coquette". A muzzy cityscape unfolds beneath us, more trees and dirt than tar and concrete. Thousands of giant bats are returning to their roost at the old Catholic church as the sun strengthens. Calling this place a "flirt" is a little optimistic, while the road up here is probably a grade 2 4x4 track.

We ask Alan if he can take us to a market - that's where the colour of any African city can be found. We're greeted with the normal chaos and smiles - only the language and the long loaves really set it apart from any market in Mozambique. We wander around, chatting to the friendly, tourist-starved people. But we want to see bushmeat. Is it really a way of life?

Five minutes later we've walked past piles of smoked fish, a huge barbel slowly suffocating on a table and are staring at the grimacing faces of monkeys and forest antelope. A lone baby pangolin is perched on top of a mound of dead animals, its armoured scales and praying claws somehow far worse than the rest. We ask about chimps - we need to go to a different market to buy one of them, but we don't really have the stomach for it.

Instead we trade the cacophony of the market for the even greater cacophony of the river, where an immense boat race is taking place. The pirogue race is an annual event, made even bigger by the 50th anniversary celebrations. We are told that teams from Chad, Cameroon and Angola have made the trip.

Jacques and I join the rest of our team here. Bozizé makes an appearance, warmly greeting a few of us, but not to apologise for taking our rooms, it seems. His entourage is menacing - soldiers from Chad manning machine guns mounted on bakkies, Raybans poking out of green turbans and a sense of violence in the air.

The president takes a 9mm pistol from a bodyguard, raises it and sends a bullet whistling into the Congo. The race is on! We don't know who's who, or who's winning, but the fervour is catching. I jump into a pirogue and follow the action for a while. About 60 paddlers are driving each boat forward, doing a huge circular lap. A local team wins and the chaos intensifies. Smiles dominate the proceedings, while the athletes trade good-natured insults.

We can't stick around to see the medals handed out, though. We've got a date with the First Lady, a school and 300 mozzie nets. There, Kingsley is continuing his good work, repeating the message - as he has thousands of times before. The fact that the President's wife is accompanied by four government ministers shows the high level of support Kingsley and this whole mission has.

At the same time a few of our group had gone to fetch Claude, the young chimpanzee that had been rescued from being an attraction at a bar. We had originally planned to rescue up to four chimps, but one had died before we arrived and the other two were being kept by the owner, who was not content to release her money-spinners. Still, rescuing even one animal is a start, and the seven-year-old Claude would be transferred to the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden outside Nelspruit.

Our two objectives are now complete, and we make our way back to the military base before dark. Jacques and I requisition our own transport again, this time to get a closer look at the old church we had spotted from the hillside. Styled on the Notre Dame in Paris, it's beautiful in the afternoon light, and a service is being held under a tree to the side of the building.

Backstreet Midland Restaurants have Chimpanzee Meat on their Menus

BACKSTREET Midland restaurants and market stalls are selling chimpanzee meat, the Sunday Mercury can reveal.
The sickening trade in bush meat has been exposed by a Government whistleblower, who says the chimp flesh was identified after it was seized by trading standards officials.

He told the Sunday Mercury: “It is well known this practice is underway in the region but I was shocked to discover the meat that was tested was once a chimpanzee.

“Dubious meat is often tested, and has turned out to be things like rats and vermin in the past – but chimpanzee is unbelievable.”
The chimp meat is understood to have been discovered after raids by trading standards in the Midlands.

The startling claims were last night backed up by British bush meat experts who outlined the shocking scale of the worldwide trade in dead wild animals, which stretches from Africa to the UK.

Dr Marcus Rowcliffe, research fellow at the Zoological Society of London, is an expert on the bush meat trade in Africa.

He recently completed an in-depth study into the smuggling of it through Charles de Gaulle airport in France, the hub of the trade in Europe.

It revealed that about 270 tonnes of illegal bush meat may be passing through the busy airport each year and out into the rest of the continent and UK.

Dr Rowcliffe said: “I’m not at all surprised that bush meat is on sale in the Midlands because we know the trade is going on in the UK and that there is a regular flow of smuggled meat into the country.

“However, it is not often that chimpanzee is found as that is rare even in the markets of Africa, so I am surprised by that.

“When we carried out our study at Charles de Gaulle airport, we estimated that five tonnes a week was coming into Europe and then being distributed across the continent by traders in Paris.

“Obviously I believe less than five tonnes a week makes it into the UK, but there is still a significant amount that is brought in and customs officials are very aware of it.

“What we do not know is exactly how it is distributed once it gets to the UK.

‘‘But from our work in France we discovered that the smugglers do not make much effort to disguise the bush meat, and quite openly take their chances trying to get into the country by bringing it in their suitcases.

“One man we found had nothing in his suitcase other than 50kg of bush meat.

“It is not on par with something like the drugs trade but there is clearly money to be made out of smuggling it and we know that it is associated with other underground activities.”

Bush meat is from wild animals hunted in places such as the tropical forests of West and Central Africa and is a tradition dating back centuries.
According to the Born Free foundation, nearly 7,500 tonnes of illegal meat products enter Britain every year.

Some is bush meat, brought in disguised as other meat products such as beef or lamb.

Once in the UK, more than half of the illegal meat is distributed through wholesalers or sold at local street markets.

The trade in bush meat has become big business and although accurate figures are difficult to come by it is estimated that overall the international trade in wild animal products has a value of more than £2.5 billion.

It has been claimed that a 4kg monkey would cost around £85 from smugglers in France, whereas the price would be as little as £4 in Africa.

But although some hunters target gorillas, chimpanzees and other primate species, great apes constitute less than one per cent of bush meat from all species sold on the market.

Dr Rowcliffe pointed out that the bush meat products were not just imported for consumption but also for medicinal purposes or as status symbols, signifying luxury and wealth.

But he warned that imported meat could be carrying infectious diseases such as foot-and-mouth, anthrax, the Ebola virus, TB or cholera.
The bush meat trade has also had a devastating impact on the numbers of primates living in the wild.

Adina Farmaner, Executive Director of the Jane Goodall Institute UK, said: “It is a reality that bush meat is being sold on the streets of Britain and I am not surprised that is available in the Midlands.

“From my own experience of Brixton market in London all you have to do is ask for some ‘special meat’ for a ‘special ceremony’ and you will get what you are looking for.

“The bush meat trade is a huge problem in certain parts of Africa and is one of the main reasons the population in the wild has been reduced from approximately one million about 50 years ago, to just a few hundred thousand today.”

Are Chimpanzees in the open savannas or woodlands


While some chimpanzees historically inhabited open savannas, most modern surviving populations in Africa favor woodlands and forests. While they are comfortable on the ground, much of their lives are bound up in the treetops.

Chimpanzees split their time between trees and the ground.

Use of Trees

Chimpanzees may hunt certain species of red colobus monkey in the treetops.Chimpanzees spend much of their time traveling on the ground, walking on all fours. Nonetheless, they are much more arboreal than their bigger relatives the gorillas. In most habitats, they forage extensively on fruits, nuts and bark in the canopy, where they also occasionally hunt monkeys; retreat each night to build sleeping nests; and escape from some terrestrial predators by climbing.

Tree Species
 Chimps are familiar with the fruiting schedules of trees within their given forest.Across their historically large range in sub-Saharan Africa, chimps utilize many different species of trees. As part of the chimp discussion in "The Behavior Guide to African Mammals," Richard D. Estes mentions various kinds of figs, oil palms and other fruit- or nut-producing genera like Coula, Panda and Uapaca.

Chimps are familiar with the fruiting schedules of trees within their given forest.

Locomotion
Chimpanzees may swing through the canopy or carefully clamber over branches.A chimpanzee's long and enormously powerful arms reflect its swiftest kind of arboreal locomotion, the under-branch swinging movement called brachiation. But they also haul themselves up trunks by wrapping their arms around them and steadily move through the canopy on the backs of large branches.

Chimpanzees are capable of organization

While making decisions, we generally try to maximize outcomes, even if it means cooperating and sharing a reward with another person. But does this ability set humans apart from the rest of the animal kingdom?

A recent study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that humans' closest living relatives -- non-human primates -- are also capable of this kind of organization. Though more research is needed, the findings contribute to scientists' understanding of the evolutionary origins of cooperation and weighing decisions in humans.

Monkeys More Calculating Around Money

The researchers, led by scientists at Georgia State University, tested the "Assurance Game" in pairs of college students, chimpanzees and capuchin monkeys. Each subject tested next to a member of the same species and was given two tokens -- one labeled "Stag," and the other "Hare" (more on that here).

In every trial, each subject had to return one of the tokens to the experimenter without knowing what the other subject planned to do. If the subjects turned in the same token, they received a reward -- money for humans and fruit for non-human primates.

When both subjects gave back the "Stag" token, they received a larger reward than any other combination. A "Hare-Hare" match-up yielded a reward, but not as much as the "Stag-Stag" combo. Subjects were not rewarded when their tokens didn't match up.

To maximize the reward, participants had to cooperate and learn quickly which combinations yielded the largest reward.

Brain's 'Hardware' Key To Decision-Making

None of the human subjects received instructions for the game. The researchers focused on ways to make experimental conditions as similar as possible so one species didn't have an advantage.

After analyzing the results from each species, the scientists found that five of the 26 pairs of humans maximized their rewards by playing "Stag-Stag" 75 percent or more of the time. Humans cooperated and optimized their rewards more than chimpanzees and capuchins, but still did not perform as well as the researchers expected.

Eight of the chimp pairs cooperated to receive rewards but none of these groups chose "Stag-Stag" or "Hare-Hare" more than the other. Only one of the six capuchin pairs, however, chose the most fruitful combination ("Stag-Stag") as a nonrandom behavior, as opposed to just by chance.

In all species, subjects cooperated for a reward. Surprisingly, some non-human primate pairs cooperated more than some human pairs, although humans were generally better at maximizing rewards.

Based on these findings, it appears that chimpanzees, capuchins and other primates are able to understand the benefits of working together.

Chimpanzees observed disengaging snares meant for Cane Rats

Five male wild chimpanzees living in an African forest have figured out how to deactivate, and sometimes even destroy, snares set out by human hunters, according to scientists who watched the clever chimps in action.

The chimps' ability, documented in the latest issue of the journal Primates, demonstrates that these animals can learn without trial and error, since one mistake for them could be fatal.

The discovery also explains why wild chimpanzees living in Bossou, Guinea, suffer from very few snare-related injuries and deaths versus chimps living in other places.

"At Bossou, hunters are trying to catch cane rats," co-author Gaku Ohashi told Discovery News. "Sometimes duikers (a type of antelope) are trapped. Villagers at Bossou do not eat chimpanzees because they think of chimps as the reincarnation of their ancestors. However the snares cause indiscriminate damage, ensnaring any and all animals that come into contact with them."

Ohashi, a research fellow at the Japan Monkey Center, and colleague Tetsuro Matsuzawa observed the Bossou chimpanzees from July 2002 to March 2003 and then again from April to Sept. 2004. During those times, the researchers recorded six instances where five different wild male chimps took steps to deactivate snares they encountered.

One adult male chimp heard a female chimp, accompanied by her one-year-old infant, whimpering next to a duiker carcass in a snare. According to the researchers, the male chimp slapped the duiker, grimaced and then jumped away. He then grasped the snare with his hands and vigorously shook it. This same male had previously shaken another snare, causing it to break.

On another day, this male was with a few other adult chimps and a six-year-old juvenile male. When the group encountered a snare, the juvenile managed to completely deactivate the snare by causing ropes attached to it to become untied.

These, and the other documented instances, suggest the snare deactivation techniques may "have been passed down through the generations and carried on in the group as culture," Ohashi and Matsuzawa wrote.

"Some time in the past, an individual that had been ensnared might have started this behavior," explained Ohashi, who added that "young chimpanzees acquired this technique without any injuries."

In other locations, chimpanzees that survive snare injuries can be maimed for life. In Kalinzu Forest, Uganda, for example, 10 out of 16 identified males had injuries on their limbs. In Budongo Forest, also in Uganda, one-fifth of all chimps exhibited limb deformities due to snares.

Vernon Reynolds, a primate expert who serves as an adviser at the Budongo Forest Research Project, told Discovery News that the observations made at Bossou are "exceptional, not having been reported from any other site."

Reynolds isn't sure why the male chimpanzees at Bossou have the ability to deactivate snares, while chimps elsewhere do not. Wild chimpanzees in Africa, however, seem to often exhibit concern over the devices.

"Our chimps at Budongo make alarm calls at snares and also, on one occasion at least, our alpha male removed a snare from an adult female," Reynolds said.

Ohashi hopes better education at locations where the snares are used -- parts of East and West Africa -- could make hunters more aware of the unintended consequences of their actions. At Bossou, a local nongovernmental organization has also started farming cane rats in the village.

"If farming cane rats provides adequate subsistence for local people at Bossou," Ohashi and Matsuzawa conclude, "then snare hunting activity for bush meat may become less necessary and the risks facing chimpanzees should subsequently diminish."

Chimpanzee Moms Mourn for their babies... Stop the breeding and selling of Chimpanzee babies Missouri Primate Foundation

This is one of many reasons why Chimpanzees should not be bred or sold. The missouri Primate Foundation is the largest Chimpanzee breeder of pets in the US. They don't believe that the mother mourns for her baby when they are ripped away from them screaming.

 For the first time, researchers of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in the Netherlands report in detail how a chimpanzee mother responds to the death of her infant. The chimpanzee mother shows behaviours not typically seen directed toward live infants, such as placing her fingers against the neck and laying the infant's body on the ground to watch it from a distance. The observations of Katherine Cronin and her team provide unique insights into how chimpanzees, one of humans' closest primate relatives, learn about death.

The research team conducted their observations at Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust in Zambia, where wild-born chimpanzees who have been rescued from illegal trade live in the largest social groups and enclosures in the world. Dr. Katherine Cronin and Edwin Van Leeuwen of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics collaborated with Innocent Chitalu Mulenga of Chimfunshi and Dr. Mark Bodamer, a professor of Psychology at Gonzaga University in Washington State, USA.

Close relationship

Chimpanzee mothers typically are in close contact with their offspring for several years, carrying them almost continuously for two years and nursing until they are four to six years old. The close relationship between the mother and offspring continues for several years after weaning, and is one of the most important relationships in chimpanzee life.
Premature death

Cronin and her colleagues observed the behaviour that a female chimpanzee expressed toward her 16-month-old infant who had recently died. After carrying the infant's dead body for more than a day, the mother laid the body out on the ground in a clearing and repeatedly approached the body and held her fingers against the infant's face and neck for multiple seconds. She remained near the body for nearly an hour, then carried it over to a group of chimpanzees and watched them investigate the body. The next day, the mother was no longer carrying the body of the infant.

Nearly nothing is known about how primates react to death of close individuals, what they understand about death, and whether they mourn. The MPI researchers therefore believe to have reported a unique transitional period as the mother learned about the death of her infant, a process never before reported in detail. But they largely refrain from interpretation, while providing extensive video to allow viewers the opportunity to judge for themselves what chimpanzees understand about death.

'The videos are extremely valuable, because they force one to stop and think about what might be happening in the minds of other primates', Cronin says. 'Whether a viewer ultimately decides that the chimpanzee is mourning, or simply curious about the corpse, is not nearly as important as people taking a moment to consider the possibilities.'

Mother-infant bond

Previous reports have documented chimpanzee mothers carrying their deceased young for days or weeks, demonstrating that the severing of the mother-infant bond is incredibly difficult for chimpanzees. The current research complements these observations and sheds new light on how chimpanzees might learn about death.
'These data contribute to a small but growing body of data on how nonhuman primates respond to death. We hope these objective accounts will continue to accumulate and eventually allow researchers to take a comprehensive look at the extent to which nonhuman primate understand death, and how they respond to it.'

Kiki, the Chimpanzee has joined Monkey World

Kiki, the 9-year-old female chimpanzee, started her life in the forests of Africa before hunters killed her family and smuggled the infant out of Africa and into The Lebanon.
Sadly Kiki’s story is not uncommon as this brutal illegal trade in man’s closest living relative is documented throughout the world.

Kiki is one of the lucky ones that has been rescued by Monkey World – Ape Rescue Centre in Dorset, England. The adolescent chimpanzee made the 15-hour journey from her small cage in Beirut, on a Middle Eastern Airlines (MEA) flight to London, and onto the Dorset sanctuary where the Monkey World team have been rescuing individuals like Kiki since 1987. To date Monkey World has assisted 19 different governments around the world to stop the illegal smuggling of monkeys and apes from the wild.

Having only been at Monkey World for a week, Kiki has settled in well and is already meeting her new adopted family of 18 other chimpanzees. She has made friends with several other adolescent females and has also met the dominant male in the community, Hananya.

Dr Alison Cronin, Monkey World’s Director and one of the team that rescued Kiki, said “It is amazing to see that after being stolen from the wild and kept in a small cage in solitary confinement for 9 years, her instinct to live with others of her own kind is so strong. Family and friends are the most important part of a chimpanzee’s life and here at Monkey World we give them families and their lives back again. It is great to see Kiki making so much progress so quickly.”

Chimpanzees are an endangered species that are threatened with habitat destruction and bush-meat hunting. The day the Monkey World team arrived in Beirut to organize Kiki’s rescue, the Lebanese government collapsed, yet in spite of political turmoil, the British and Lebanese authorities were committed to the conservation of this endangered species. Monkey World was assisted by NGO, Animal’s Lebanon, to organise Kiki’s transportation.

Massacre of Apes and Exotic Animals in Gabon

Well, call me mean, but after reading this I would like to personally buy all of the heads of the men that did this and one finger and one toe from each of them. I'm willing to pay big bucks for them too!!!!!

Law enforcement officers in Gabon have arrested five men accused of possessing illegal animal products, including those of endangered species.

The raids, conducted by the country’s Water and Forest and Defense Ministries with the assistance of WWF partner AALF, yielded an alarming number of ape, leopard and elephant parts.
Among the items confiscated were the head and hands of an endangered gorilla, along with twelve chimpanzee heads and 30 chimpanzee hands. The skins of twelve leopards, a portion of lion skin, snake skins and five elephant tails were also discovered.
“WWF commends the Water and Forest Ministry and AALF for this important arrest,” said David Greer, WWF African Great Ape Manager. “However, the massive collection of protected species confiscated in this operation is highly disturbing. To my knowledge, there has not been a seizure of great ape body parts of this magnitude in Central Africa over the last ten years.”

AALF, known by the French acronym for Support for the Application of the Wildlife Act, is a joint program of Gabon’s Water and Forest Ministry with the organizations Conservation Justice and Brainforest. AALF assists local authorities with wildlife crime investigations and supports rigorous prosecutions. It follows a model established by the Last Great Ape Organization in Cameroon, which has been replicated with success in neighboring countries.

“The problem of illegal wildlife poaching and trade is not specific to Gabon, such specialized dealers exist throughout Western and Central Africa. But these arrests demonstrate that stopping them is possible with effective law enforcement,” said Luc Mathot, founder of Conservation Justice.

The suspects are being held in custody while an investigation is conducted. They are expected to appear in court for legal proceedings this week.

“Recent ivory poaching prosecutions prove that the judicial authorities in Gabon now regard wildlife cases with high importance. We hope they will do the same for ape and big cat cases such as this one,” Mathot said.

“This monumental arrest is only the first step toward catalyzing positive change in upholding wildlife law in Gabon. In order to establish a long-term deterrent to committing wildlife crime, appropriate consequences must be applied in this and all cases of illegal poaching and trade,” said Greer.

Chimpanzee's arm trapped in a mantrap for 5 days

On 10th January a team from CSWCT, JGI, UWA & Budongo Conservation Field Station,  rescued an adult male chimp that had been caught in a mantrap. Thanks to a tip off from a ten year old boy, the team was able to trail the group of chimps with the injured individual.After  laying in wait for two days the chimp was finally spotted in Mparangasi; a forest in Hoima. The chimp was darted, giving the team a chance to release his arm from the mantrap had he had carried  around for five days. As soon as he woke up, he retreated to a nearby shrub.

Reproductive behaviors of Chimpanzees and Bonobos

The study of cooperation and competition is fundamental to the field of social behaviour (Harcourt, A.H., & de Waal, F., Eds., 1992, Oxford University Press). Many of these publications, particularly in the field of primatology, have addressed coalitions and alliances, especially among males who were assumed until relatively recently to be the strategic sex. A new report by Surbeck et al. provides additional insights into the costs and benefits of coalitions and other close associations for males. In particular, these authors studied polygynandrous bonobos (Pan paniscus) finding that maternal support increases a son's reproductive success with the potential to decrease the reproductive success of dominants. Presumably, mothers gain via indirect fitness. Another important aspect of the new report is the finding that males exhibit a steep, linear dominance hierarchy. Surbeck et al. suggest that bonobos are intermediary between chimpanzees (exhibiting coercive social traits) and polygynandrous muruquis (characterized in the literature as "egalitarian") on a putative continuum of aggression. Of further significance is the authors' insight that agonistic (and, possibly, other) support modifies spatial dynamics among males so that females are no longer defensible for the dominant. It seems, also, that support may decrease the benefits and/or increase the costs of aggression. It is widely known that dispersal in mammals is primarily male biased (i.e., in most species, males disperse from their natal groups before reproducing, often termed "female-philopatry"). In these species, support of daughters by mothers is known to enhance daughters' reproductive success. Surbeck et al. hypothesized that the same pattern would be found in species in which dispersal is female biased (e.g., bonobos), and their hypothesis was supported. In primates, dispersal in prosimians and cercopithecine monkeys is primarily male biased; in apes and many Neotropical monkeys, dispersal is female biased. Where kinship was known in studies of coalitions and alliances across the order, it is notable that, in polygynandrous chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), a congeneric of the bonobo, coalitions have been found to be independent of kinship. Unlike chimpanzees, bonobo females are dominant over males, a trait that may, in part, explain Surbeck et al.'s findings. Many other features of mammalian individuals and groups remain to be investigated before the differential benefits and costs of coalitionary behavior are understood. For example, few studies have reported alternative reproductive behaviors such as cryptic responses that might enhance male reproductive success. Related to this, few studies have tested Fisher's hypothesis that, over the long term, frequency-dependent selection should equalize fitness of alternative phenotypes. It would be helpful to view dominant and subordinate organisms and their differential traits as displays of alternate phenotypes (rather than "individuals" in use in the "social sciences") and to study these as products of condition-dependent genetic processes (e.g., switches). Phenotypes would, then, be amenable to mapping over space. Comparative studies might investigate the sociosexual and ecological causes for female-philopatry as an ancestral trait in mammals, including primates. For some of the many questions remaining, species exhibiting bisexual dispersal (e.g., mantled howler monkeys: Jones, C.B., 1980, Primates 21: 389-405, in which all age/sex combinations of coalitions were observed to occur) may yield interesting comparative data.

Chimpanzees do boundary patrolling

The Chimpanzees who live at the Ngogo site deep within Uganda’s Kibale National Park spend their days foraging and feeding, wrestling and playing, grooming and socializing. But every 10 to 14 days a group of males gathers and moves away from the rest of the group. They form a single-file line as they walk purposefully toward the edge of their territory, eventually striking out into the territory of a neighboring group of chimpanzees. They move in atypical silence, scanning the underbrush and listening for any sign of other chimps. If they encounter a large group of neighboring chimps, and are outnumbered, they flee back to their territory. But if they come across a single chimp from a neighboring group, they attack – surrounding, beating, and jumping on the victim. Some victims are killed outright, others manage to escape, broken, bleeding, and unlikely to survive. Infants are often torn away from female chimpanzees and are killed and cannibalized.

This behavior, known as boundary patrolling, was first observed by Jane Goodall in the 1970’s among chimpanzees at Gombe National Park in Tanzania and has since been observed in many chimpanzee groups that live side-by-side with others, including the Ngogo group. These border patrols have captured the interest of primatologists and the public, not only because of their shocking brutality, but also because they bear a striking resemblance to human warfare. Until recently, primatologists have been unable to definitively explain why chimpanzees participate in border patrols and lethal attacks against their neighbors. But after observing the Ngogo chimpanzee community for 10 years between 1999 and 2009, primatologist John Mitani and a group of researchers have discovered the answer: chimpanzees attack their neighbors in order to expand their territory.

During the 10-year observation period, researchers witnessed the killings of 18 neighboring chimpanzees at the hands of Ngogo males on patrol, and found circumstantial evidence for three more killings. The majority of the Ngogo border patrols, and 13 of the killings, occurred in an area to the northeast of Ngogo territory. These killings represented a staggering loss for the chimpanzee community living in this area. The death rate experienced by these chimpanzees during the 10-year observation period was 23 to 75 times higher than the median death rates experienced by nine other well-studied chimpanzee communities.

In 2009 the Ngogo chimpanzees incorporated this northeastern region into their territory. While they had previously only entered this region during boundary patrols, large parties of Ngogo chimps began to feed and socialize in the region, and neighboring chimps were no longer observed in the area. The newly acquired land represented a significant 22% increase in territory for the Ngogo community. This new land provided them with increased access to resources including food and safety, and may allow them to attract more female mates. Dr. Mitani, lead author of the Ngogo study, noted that these observations demonstrate that “patrolling seems to be part of a long-term strategy to dominate neighbors. If successful, chimpanzees can acquire more land. All chimpanzees will do this if they can. The Ngogo chimpanzees have been particularly successful because they have an in built competitive advantage. That advantage is due to the extremely large size of the community.”

The violent boundary patrols and annexation of neighboring territory observed at Ngogo may sound a lot like human warfare. After all, humans have fought over access to land and resources for centuries. But what can this research tell us about the origins of human warfare? Some scientists, most notably primatologist Richard Wrangham, see this chimpanzee behavior as evidence that a propensity for warfare stretches deep into our evolutionary past. He reasons that similarities between human and chimpanzee warfare indicate that warfare has been shaped by evolution in both cases, arguing that, “there has been selection for a male psyche that, in certain circumstances, seeks opportunities to carry out low-cost attacks on unsuspecting neighbors.” And perhaps this psychological disposition gives rise to warfare among chimps and humans.

But Dr. Mitani, lead author of the Ngogo study, urges caution, emphasizing “that human warfare is quite variable. Fighting others for land is only one reason humans go to war today.” The problem is that human warfare is so incredibly complex – there are as many reasons for war as there have been wars. The chimpanzee warfare observed at Ngogo most closely parallels the territorial raiding seen among contemporary humans living in traditional hunter-gatherer groups. But did our ancient ancestors practice this kind of warfare? Did this type of warfare give rise to the way we fight wars today? In this case it’s difficult to make direct comparisons between human warfare and the behavior of the Ngogo chimps, and Dr. Mitani warns that answering these questions may be based largely on speculation.

Our Cell Phones effect Primates and their habitats. Chimpanzees, Gorillas

Gorilla numbers in the Congo are declining. The number of mobile phones around the globe is on the rise. As unlikely as it may seem, there is a connection.

Each and every time your mobile phone rings, a mineral ore called coltan enables the call to be made. Coltan, which coats the tiny capacitor inside most mobile phones, is mined in central Africa with devastating flow-on effects: the deforestation of primate habitat and butchering of animals to the point of endangering species.

Eighty per cent of the world's reserves of coltan are found in the Congo. This same region is home to the mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) and Grauer's gorilla (Gorilla beringei grauer - formerly known as the eastern lowland gorilla). As mining operations expand to meet escalating global demand for coltan, clearing the country's lush forest, the habitat of these gorillas and at least 10 other primate species is being destroyed, and with it their food sources. In addition to these threats to their survival, the increased human population in mining areas has led to these primates being hunted for bush meat.

The United Nations Environment Programme reported a 90 per cent decline in the number of Grauer's gorillas in eight Democratic Republic of Congo national parks between 1996 and 2001. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature classifies mountain and Grauer's gorillas as endangered and estimates their respective populations as being 680 and 16,900 individuals.

Andrea Edwards, formerly a primate keeper at Melbourne Zoo, has spent the last 18 months in the Congo as the co-manager of the Lwiro Primate Rehabilitation Centre. She and 29 local Congolese staff have over 100 chimpanzees and monkeys in their care. Some have been orphaned; many are injured. Every animal has reached the sanctuary because they have been caught up in the bush meat trade or the mining of coltan, gold and diamonds.

"Some of the mining is legal, but most is run by rebel armies where workers are rarely paid or paid a minimum wage in return for guns which they use for hunting," says Edwards. "They eat the meat themselves or sell to others. The amount of bush meat coming out of the area is on the increase. Babies, which don't have enough meat on them, are sold as pets."

Edwards reports animals that come to the rehabilitation centre are presenting with hepatitis, measles and common colds, which can be life-threatening, as their immune systems are not equipped to deal with human diseases.

And it is not only the animals that are suffering - communities are being plundered. UN Security Council reports have implicated illegal mining and smuggling of coltan in funding the military occupation of the Congo. Much of the ore is being smuggled over the eastern borders of the country by militias to Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi, fuelling conflict in the Congo, while prisoners-of-war and children are often forced to work in the illegal mines. The Democratic Republic of the Congo Permanent Mission to the United Nations (DRCPMUN) reported that the Rwandan army had made an estimated US$250 million over a period of 18 months from the sale of coltan, though no coltan is mined in Rwanda.

Testifying to being woken in the night by gunfire, Edwards says her staff members have a suitcase packed and stored at the sanctuary, ready to run into the fields in case there is a raid during the night by rebel armies. "Rape, murder and kidnapping are not uncommon. It is a very volatile environment," she says.

Miners working for legal operations are paid well in comparison with workers elsewhere in the Congo. According to the DRCPMUN, the average Congolese worker makes $10 a month, while a coltan miner can make anywhere from $10 to $50 a week.

If manufacturers of mobile phones and other electronics were to buy coltan only from legally mined sources it would stamp out illegal trade; however, this is easier said than done. Edwards explains that, while certified coltan can be sourced, most of it has originated in the Congo and been shipped to another country like Rwanda, where it is certified before being sold, making it very difficult to track its origins.

Recycling coltan is a proven way to reduce demand for the ore and reduce the destructive consequences of illegal mining. Melbourne Zoo, in conjunction with the Jane Goodall Institute, has launched the 'They're Calling You' campaign, encouraging Australians to donate their old phones. In the first four months 4,000 phones have been collected.

Melbourne Zoo's Community Conservation Manager, Rachel Lowry, says most people have not yet realised that their phone is related to primates and their habitat. The campaign corporate partner, Aussie Recycling Program (ARP), donates $2 from each phone received, before rebuilding and shipping them to countries where there is a demand for refurbished phones at reduced prices. So far the campaign has raised $50,000, with 50 per cent going to the Jane Goodall Institute and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. The balance goes to Australian zoos to be spent on captive breeding programs. "The first cheque from ARP provided food for two months for 300 rangers in the Congo whose daily duties were to patrol jungle areas to stamp out poaching," says Lowry.

CEO of the Jane Goodall Institute of Australia, Polly Cevallos, says the funding they've received for the rangers' salaries has resulted in confiscation of nearly 2,000 snares and weapons and has contributed to a significant decrease in the presence of bush meat in village market places.

So, how is the mobile phone industry responding to the plight of gorillas in the Eastern Congo? Chris Althaus, chief executive of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) says: "Our industry has complied with UN Security Council requests since we first became aware of the problem in 2001. The mobiles industry recognises that it is difficult to get a clear understanding of the origins of coltan and have asked our suppliers to verify in writing that they do not source it from the Democratic Republic of Congo."

"We have minimised our use of the capacitors containing coltan, or tantalum as it is called when used in mobiles," says Althaus. "In a handset, one or two capacitors out of more than 100 would contain coltan which equates to less than 0.4 g of tantalum or about 0.04 per cent of the phone's weight. Not all handsets use it. Tantalum is however used in mobile phone handsets that require superior voice qualities." This includes smartphones which are now hugely popular and in demand.

A statement issued by the AMTA points out that, according to the United States Geological Survey, in 2007 Australia produced more than half of the world's supply of coltan, while Brazil and Canada were also major suppliers of the mineral. Since then, Australian mining company Talison Minerals, which had previously supplied more than 30 per cent of global coltan demand, has mothballed its operation in Western Australia's Pilbara region because it was no longer considered viable. Certainly, the Congo's contribution to global coltan production is relatively small (a little less than one per cent), but the devastation caused by illegal mining is none the less disturbing for that.

Mobile phones are only one of many electronic devices containing coltan. According to the AMTA, tantalum

capacitors are critical components in computer motherboards, computer disc drives, video camcorders and engine control units and are used right across the electronics, chemical and defence industries. Product launches with huge consumer interest, such as that in 2000 of the Sony PlayStation 2, place huge demand on the coltan industry. This example was cited for an increase in price for the powdered mineral, from

$100/kg to $400/kg - resulting in a frenzied increase in coltan mining in Congo.

The electronic age and all the gadgets that go with it are undoubtedly here to stay, but with conservationists and industry experts working towards a common goal of gorilla-friendly electronic devices there is still hope that these remarkable primates can be saved from a future of permanent disconnection.

Coltan is the industrial name for columbite–tantalite, a dull black metallic mineral from which the elements niobium (formerly "columbium") and tantalum are extracted. The niobium-dominant mineral is columbite, hence the "col" half of the term. The mineral concentrates dominated by tantalum are referred to as tantalite.[1]

Tantalum from coltan is used to manufacture electronic capacitors, used in consumer electronics products such as cell phones, DVD players, video game systems and computers. Export of coltan from the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo to European and American markets has been cited by experts[2][3] as helping to finance the present-day conflict in the Congo, with the DanChurchAid agency asserting that “much of the finance sustaining the civil wars in Africa, especially in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is directly connected to coltan profits.”[4] An estimated 6.9 million people have died since 1998 in the war in the Congo[citation needed].

Proverty can be fought by contributing to the Conservation of Endangered Apes

BLURB - Conservation of endangered apes in many African countries could contribute to the fight against poverty, suggests a recent study.

WINDHOEK – Where there are apes, there is poverty – in Africa. But, pointed out a study by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), this scenario can be turned around.

This comes with an increased understanding and acknowledgement that the conservation of biodiversity leads to the conservation of livelihoods, especially for those living close to the environment.
“Efforts to conserve apes have great potential also to reduce poverty but the actual, or perceived, negative impacts of conservation may result in local apathy – or even outright hostility – to conservation efforts,” commented a senior researcher with the IIED, Dilys Roe.
The International Union of Conservation of Nature has declared Africa’s apes – the bonobos, chimpanzees and gorillas – as endangered or critically endangered because of hunting and deforestation.

The IIED said early efforts to conserve these species in strictly controlled protected areas have often led to conflict with local communities, whose access to forest resources they enjoyed for generations have become restricted. But the introduction of a new integrated conservation and development strategy that aims at creating benefits for local communities, while reducing their reliance on forest-based resources in natural parks, has shown a significant reduction in conflict, and hence reduction of the destruction of apes.

This project first started in two national parks in Uganda and was eventually extended to 18 other African countries.

In Uganda, there was a serious onslaught on the natural forests of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, leading to a threat to the conservation of the highly endangered Mountain Gorilla.

Bwindi borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and is home to about half of the world’s population of Mountain Gorilla.

It has been managed as a protected area since 1932, and later gazetted as a forest reserve and then as a game sanctuary in 1961.

From 1961 until 1991, said the IIED, it was managed as a forest reserve and game sanctuary. By 1991, it was gazetted a national park in an attempt to conserve its threatened fauna and flora.

In 1994, the park was declared a World Heritage Site. This meant that the local communities who for centuries used this forest area as a source of timber, minerals, non-timber forest resources, game and agricultural land, now could no longer do so, even though these activities have led to significant losses to the forest, especially during the 1980’s.

The Mgahinga Gorilla National Park borders Rwanda and the DRC, and was initially managed as a gorilla sanctuary from 1931 to 1941 before it became both a game and forest reserve until 1991.

The IIED said the park was heavily encroached on and settled, and when the Ugandan government declared the areas as national parks in 1991, more than 2400 people were displaced at Mgahinga.

The 1991 legislation intensified conflict between local communities and the management of the parks, with the closure of the forest-resource use coupled with the arrest of local people engaged in mining and timber harvesting.

At Bwindi, about 1773 people were evicted and the local people could no longer legally use the forest-resources, which led to a massive increase in prices of forest products.

This in turn led to declining incomes for forest-dependent households and a reduction of food security, according to 1996 statistics.

“These impacts were felt most acutely by the poorest and most marginalised social groups (mostly the Batwa community chased out of the Bwindi area) who tended to be most heavily dependent on forest products,” said the IIED.

The Batwa is considered a marginal group of hunter-gatherers who drew important cultural and social values from the two forest areas. Today, they are all evicted from the Bwindi area and live squatter lives on the periphery of the two national parks.
The IIED said resentment and discontent over the dislocation persists to this day, nearly 20 years later, which is aggravated by “crop raiding” of adjacent agricultural fields by wildlife from the national parks.

Hence the decision to embark on the integrated conservation and development initiative of which activities range from single outreach programmes that aim to ‘improve’ local attitudes to conservation, to initiatives that give communities decision-making power over natural resource management and ways to benefit from them.

“These conservation initiatives are making a concerted effort to address poverty issues, but surprisingly few of them seem to explore whether or not they have been successful by measuring or reporting on the results of their efforts,” said researcher Chris Sandbrock.

One strategy is to generate income from ‘gorilla tourism’, or ‘great ape tourism’, which is a popular way of exploiting the presence of apes into money for local communities.

However, the IIED suggested that revenue from great ape tourism is rarely shared with local people on a “significant enough scale” to give local communities enough incentive to support the conservation of these apes.

Another strategy piloted in 1993 was to re-establish certain specific user rights of buffer zone communities to key resources within the national parks like medicinal plants, fibers for basket weaving and the production of granaries, as well as bee-keeping.

Another was a first attempt by the Ugandan authorities’ protected area system - and a first for Africa – to develop resource use agreements with local communities.

These allow for beekeeping and the collection of bamboo rhizomes for on-farm planting.

Yet another strategy introduced in the late 1990s was park revenue sharing in support of the adjacent community development projects, such as the rehabilitation of schools and health facilities.

This revenue was initially generated from gorilla trekking fees, and was later changed to an allocation of a certain percentage from the park entry fees.

The IIED said this has led to a significant decrease in revenue to the communities because most money was generated from gorilla trekking.

With lobbying from local and international groups, the Ugandan Government decided to add one percent of the gorilla trekking fee to the community development revenue pot.

Other funds generated through a forest conservation fund have so far been invested into communal infrastructure projects, mostly schools.

And, said the IIED, the tourism programme has generated local benefits through community-based tourism enterprises.

But communities, their leaders and politicians differ over how the generated funds should be spent.

On the one hand, individual households have favoured projects that generate income that can be used to offset some of the direct costs of conservation – like crop raiding by wildlife – while local leaders and politicians have favoured social infrastructure projects, to which the bulk of the funds have been directed.

But, stated the IIED, the new strategy has led to the conservation of the Mountain Gorilla and other wildlife in the parks.

A 5 percent increase in the Mountain Gorilla numbers have been recorded since 2002, which compares very favourably with other African countries that have great ape populations.

Furthermore, it said that park boundaries have stabilised with almost no loss of forest cover inside the national parks as incidences of encroachment have rarely been reported since 1995.

Furthermore, said the IIED, when deliberate steps are taken to spread the effects of tourism revenues, benefits through local employment can be realised through a range of channels.

Bonobos and Chimpanzees have different Behaviours

Bonobos are the new darlings of the noble savage crowd. They were bitterly disappointed by the rest of the great apes that, as recently as the 1970’s, were all supposed to be peaceful, vegetarian, and inoffensive. When Jane Goodall and others started actually observing great apes in the wild and, as chronicled in books such as Wrangham and Peterson’s Demonic Males, found that they occasionally displayed a few less endearing traits, such as hunting and eating meat, rape, infanticide, and the use of weapons in violent border warfare and raiding, true believers in the innate “goodness” of mankind demonstrated their own nobility by subjecting the messengers to furious ad hominem attacks. It didn’t work. Too many observers were reporting the same thing, and the evidence was too compelling.

Enter the Bonobo. They supposedly possess all the “good” traits their close relatives, the chimpanzees, so notably lack. Occasionally their halo will slip. For example, they compete for status, just like the other great apes. Then, too, their hagiographers will occasionally slip up. I was at a lecture about them once at which the speaker sought to emphasize their “feminist” nature. It seems the females in bonobo groups tend to form alliances for self-protection, and to maintain decorum among the males. The speaker recounted how, in one of the groups, an unruly male had attempted some aggressive behavior towards one of the females. She and her pals ganged up on the evil-doer, giving him a thorough drubbing and, in the words of the speaker, nearly tearing his scrotum completely off. Feminism was certainly vindicated by the incident, but the bonobo’s supposedly non-violent nature less so.

Be that as it may, apart from a few such rare lapses, bonobos do seem to be a great deal less violent and generally “demonic” than their close relatives, the chimpanzees. If estimates that they shared a common ancestor as recently as 1.5 to 3 million years ago are correct, it would seem to demonstrate a high degree of flexibility in the evolutionary toolkit pertaining to the innate behavioral traits that characterize humans as well as other animals. On the other hand, it may be that all these observed traits are subject to greater cultural variation within species that previously imagined. Perhaps bonobo groups can be more “demonic” than their observed behavior to date would indicate, and chimps have taken a bum rap and are really capable of more placid behavior under the right conditions.
