The life of a male Chimpanzee

…a male chimpanzee in his prime organizes his whole life around issues of rank. His attempts to maintain and achieve alpha status are cunning, persistent, energetic, and time-consuming. They affect whom he travels with, whom he grooms, where he glances, how often he scratches, where he goes, what times he gets up in the morning.

…all these behaviors come not from a drive to be violent for its own sake, but from a set of emotions that, when people show them, are labeled “pride” or, more negatively, “arrogance”.

The male chimpanzee behaves as if he is quite driven to reach the top of the community heap. But once he has been accepted as the alpha …his tendency for violence falls dramatically. …they can become benign leaders as easily as they became irritated challengers.

What most male chimpanzees strive for is being on top, the one position where they will never have to grovel. It is the difficulty of getting there that induces aggression.

I’ve been enjoying Demonic Males, a book by Richard Wrangam (Harvard professor of biological anthropology) and writer Dale Peterson.

Chimps are homo sapiens’ closest relative. I was surprised to learn chimps are genetically closer to us than they are to other great apes.

Perhaps this can explain my dreams where I hit Bill Easterly and Tyler Cowen over their heads with a big bone?

The basic idea behind Demonic males: most of the world’s problems can be attributed to our chimp-like heritage, most of all the violent instincts in males. (To which all of my female readers are likely to respond: “you needed to read a book to figure that out?”)
The authors play a little fast and loose with human political science and history, but I assume the chimp stuff is more thorough.

The exotic-animal trade is moving disease-carrying primates from labs and zoos into the hands of pet owners. The results, scientists warn, can be deadly.

Ringo is tethered to a sink pipe by a four-foot leash attached to his collar. The two-year-old, pig-tailed macaque has been bathed and toweled dry, his tail pulled through a disposable diaper that's fastened with duct tape. He wears a red-checked union suit to keep his diaper on and prevent him from getting a chill, and plays with a teddy bear and some plastic toys.

Every minute, as if on cue, Ringo utters a high-pitched cry. The monkey grabs for the pant legs of passers-by. He flings his toys across the room, then wails until they're returned. He tries to hoist himself into the sink, feet first. But because the leash is too short today, he is unable to complete his upside-down climb and tumbles to the floor. He keeps trying.

Ringo looks like a typical pet monkey: a bit rambunctious perhaps, but not dangerous. Nevertheless, he belongs to a category of primates that veterinarian Terri Parrott calls "time bombs" -- for many of them harbor highly infectious viruses that can be transmitted to humans, resulting in such deadly diseases as herpes B.

Ringo's home, Parrott's veterinary clinic in Cooper City, Florida, has a wing devoted to the care of native and nonnative wildlife. She is one of the few veterinarians in Florida who specialize in treating exotic species.

Consequently, pets, castoffs, and all manner of "problem animals" find their way to her clinic. When the owner of a blind baboon died of AIDS, for example, friends of the deceased arrived with the animal and its high chair and said simply, "Here, take this monkey." State and federal wildlife authorities often deposit confiscated animals -- such as a tiger that turned up at a gas station in Hialeah -- with Parrott. In addition to Ringo, the current primate inventory includes a capuchin seized during a federal drug bust.

These animals' fates are typical of those suffered by monkeys and other exotic pets, which are often passed like relay batons from one owner to the next. The sale and resale of certain exotic species is legal in most parts of the country (though some jurisdictions prohibit keeping certain wild animals as pets, and others require that owners be licensed). The exotic-animal trade is regulated by a confusing mélange of authorities:

State veterinarians handle health matters related to the sale and ownership of these animals; state fish and game agencies are responsible for overseeing some animals, while agriculture departments monitor others; the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regulates the interstate -- but not intrastate -- sale of endangered species; and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) watches over the importation of primates and, presumably, their resale as pets, which in some cases is legal and in others is not. In short, no one is in charge.

Little wonder that exotic pets are so often doomed to confinement in backyard cages or basements. Some are released to the wild, where they die from disease or starvation. Others end up with breeders, who sell newborns to pet owners ill equipped to care for them. Still others are foisted off on "sanctuaries" that often are merely fronts for illicit animal-peddling operations.

Parrott knows that finding Ringo a suitable home will be anything but easy. His unruliness -- so evident on this day -- will only complicate the search: The foot-and-a-half-tall monkey somehow manages to unsnap the leash from his collar and sprint across the examining room, swiping at jars and folders. Parrott eventually corners the escape artist, who is surprisingly submissive when she pins his arms behind his back. Ringo marches obediently across the room and allows her to reattach the leash. This behavior, she says, is hierarchical: Ringo knows that she's dominant, and therefore he gives in to her commands.

But if that hierarchy is what allows Parrott to control Ringo, it also causes her concern; because of it, she says, anyone who owns a pet macaque faces a serious threat. "If I hit Ringo, he'll attack somebody else, because that's just their pecking order," she explains. "My children, who are seven, five, and four, come in here, and if I yell at Ringo he tries to attack my kids. That's the way macaques are. What's going to happen someday is that the parents are going to yell at the baby macaque, the macaque is going to bite the kid, and the kid is going to come down in 11 to 21 days with flu-like symptoms. Then they'll take him to the pediatrician, where he won't get treated correctly, and he'll die."

Parrott and a handful of veterinary colleagues have been sounding the alarm about macaques for years, though until recently few paid attention. It wasn't that science didn't support their contentions: Since the early 1930s, primatologists have known that macaques carry herpesvirus simiae, commonly known as herpes B or B virus (scientifically referred to as cercopithecine herpesvirus), which can cause a potentially fatal brain infection in humans.

Macaques typically carry the B virus throughout their lives and shed it intermittently in saliva or genital secretions. Studies of macaques - both wild and captive -- show that the proportion of B-virus-positive animals increases as they grow to maturity. At any given moment, about two percent of infected macaques are shedding the virus via saliva, urine, feces, and tears. This shedding typically happens when a monkey is ill or under stress, or during breeding season. A human who is bitten, scratched, sneezed on, or spit at while the animal is shedding runs the risk of infection. But the monkeys rarely show any signs or symptoms to indicate shedding is taking place.

Because 80 to 90 percent of adult macaques are believed to harbor the virus, humans who work in close proximity to them -- in laboratories or other research institutions -- are presumed to be in constant peril. These workers are instructed to take Biosafety Level 2 precautions, as prescribed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH): the use of lab coats, surgical masks, goggles, gloves, and other protective measures. Such protocols can have life-or-death implications, as the herpes B virus has proved fatal in approximately 80 percent of known cases. In one 1997 incident, a young research assistant at Emory University's Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center in Atlanta died from B-virus-related complications after she was splashed in the eye with an unknown body fluid when moving a rhesus macaque -- the first time this route of transmission had ever been documented.

The disease is catastrophic: It begins with fatigue and flulike symptoms that progress to headache, vomiting, double vision, difficulty swallowing, sensory loss, and convulsions. Death can come as early as four weeks after exposure, and those who survive suffer pain, paralysis, and severe neurological damage. "Those who don't die wish they had," says a physician who has studied the virus.

Public health officials have other reasons to be worried. Monkey bites can cause severe lacerations, infected wounds, and potentially debilitating conditions such as osteomyelitis, an infection of the bone that can result in permanent deformity. Monkeys can also infect humans with the Ebola virus, monkeypox, and other deadly illnesses, although this happens very rarely. But with macaques the leading public health concern is the exposure to the B virus.

Contact with macaques was, until recently, limited almost exclusively to zookeepers and biomedical researchers, who were aware of the risk of herpes B transmission and took appropriate precautions. Documented B virus infections have therefore been rare -- the CDC places the number in the United States at about 40. But in the last few years, Parrott and other veterinarians have noticed a troubling trend: The monkeys are increasingly showing up in private hands. Macaques, which come from India, China, Japan, and other parts of Asia, have entered the pet trade due in large part to zoos, university laboratories, drug companies, and other institutions that discard their unwanted primates.

Ringo ended up with a private owner, James Beekman, a 34-year-old auto detailer, who kept the monkey illegally in his Palm Beach residence. Beekman had never secured the permit required by the state and had ignored the city's prohibition against owning primates. Authorities learned of Ringo after Beekman stopped on a sidewalk one day in 1996 to let Debra Brewster and her four-year-old daughter, Catherine, play with the young macaque. A short time later Brewster noticed a bite mark on Catherine's shoulder. A physician who treated the puncture wound recommended testing the monkey for disease. But because Beekman had no permit to keep Ringo, public health officials were unable to identify him. Then the officials played a hunch: A year earlier, Palm Beach paramedics had responded to a "911" call from an apartment dweller whose pet spider monkey was having seizures. A fire department rescue unit arrived to find the caller performing CPR on the tiny primate, but to no avail. From a photo, Brewster identified the man. It was James Beekman.

At first, Beekman denied owning Ringo, but then confessed after state wildlife investigators pieced together the truth: Beekman had bought the macaque from an exotic-animal dealer in Fort Lauderdale. Five days after the biting incident, Beekman finally turned Ringo over to state wildlife authorities. Three and a half weeks later, he was charged with five misdemeanor counts. Among the charges: secretly trying to resell the monkey to escape prosecution. During the five-day lag, health officials were left guessing about the type of monkey that had bitten Catherine and about its disease status. The girl had to undergo a series of tests and rabies shots, a regimen Beekman dismissed as an overreaction. Not only had he diapered the macaque and slept in the same bed and eaten off the same plate as the animal, he told the Palm Beach Post, but hundreds of people had held or kissed his pet with no adverse consequences.

Parrott was not quite so sanguine. After Ringo was deposited with her for safekeeping, she sent his blood off for testing. The macaque tested positive for herpes B. For five weeks, the Brewsters waited in anguish before they were assured Catherine wasn't infected. Later, Ringo was retested several times and the results proved negative. Parrott thinks he first tested positive because he was a baby then and had his infected mother's antibodies in his blood.

The primate trade -- much like the trade in exotic animals generally - is built on a succession of buyers like James Beekman, who often don't know what they're getting themselves into. It's a business filled with cruelties, primatologists say, that begin when a primate dealer removes a newborn monkey from its mother, who has given birth in captivity. The traumatized, days-old monkey is packed into a crate and hauled off to an auction or shipped by air to a customer who typically has no primate- care experience.

For some buyers, the tiny monkeys are a child substitute: They're christened, outfitted in baby clothes, and started on futile toilet-training regimens. For others, pet monkeys are status symbols, to be shown off in public and subjected to endless stress and thoughtless abuse.

Young monkeys are susceptible to measles, mumps, and other human diseases, and because adequate veterinary care is often difficult to find, many die. Within a couple of years, the monkeys usually undergo dramatic personality changes: They become unruly and destructive, which confuses and upsets their owners. They sometimes inflict life-threatening bites, so their teeth are extracted. They initiate troubling sexual displays, so the males are castrated and the females spayed. Many owners eventually stop having physical contact with their monkeys, leaving these social animals to spend the rest of their lives in the equivalent of solitary confinement. Others look for someone to take the animals off their hands.

Human-reared monkeys lack survival skills, which means they can't be returned to the wild. Zoos don't want them. Animal shelters aren't equipped to keep them. Sanctuaries are overrun with others like them. In many instances, the only willing takers are the exotic-animal dealers who fuel the often-illicit trade in the first place.

When the sources of primates for the pet trade are labs engaged in biomedical research, the public health implications are ominous. Such animals may carry other infectious diseases besides herpes B, including hepatitis and SIV, the HIV-like simian immunodeficiency virus, which can be passed to humans. Because of such health threats, the American Society of Primatologists in June 1998 came out against private ownership of primates for nonscientific or noneducational purposes. And the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians has recommended banning private ownership of primates and further sale of them as pets.

Despite these warnings, institutions continue to unload their unwanted primates. Even the nation's major primate research centers routinely turn over to sanctuaries or dealers animals that may endanger the public.

Consider New York University's Laboratory for Experimental Medicine and Surgery in Primates, which scooped up "surplus" zoo and circus chimpanzees in the late 1970s for hepatitis vaccine research and in the late 1980s for AIDS research.

In early 1995, NYU began planning to give away the lab, setting off a scramble for its 300 baboons, macaques, and other primates. About 50 of the chimps went to a huge California sanctuary that had a workforce largely composed of volunteers with no background in primate care. Another 15 chimps went to a sanctuary near Montreal. Quebec health authorities were troubled by the relocation and spent several futile months requesting copies of the animals' complete medical histories. The primates, which may have been infected with human hepatitis or HIV, wound up roaming an indoor-outdoor facility with few safety protocols. As with the California sanctuary, the chimps' care was largely entrusted to volunteers with little biosafety training.

In mid-1997, Emory University's Yerkes primate center sought to dispose of 40 sooty mangabeys -- monkeys native to West Africa -- infected with SIVsm, a strain isolated from sootys. SIVsm is a close relative of HIV type 2 (HIV-2), which can cause AIDS in humans. SIVsm has been shown to be directly transmissible to other species, and there is widespread speculation that this simian virus evolved into HIV-2 after jumping the "species barrier" to infect humans. Some scientists suspect this cross-transmission occurred when West Africans butchered and ate infected monkeys.

In 1992, the CDC reported that two U.S. laboratory workers -- including one who had handled blood specimens without gloves -- had developed antibodies to SIV. So far, the humans infected with SIVsm (at least five have now been identified in the United States) and another retrovirus called simian foamy virus have suffered no adverse health consequences, nor have their sexual partners been infected. But these monkey viruses are not thoroughly understood. There is some concern that they may mutate and, like HIV-1 (which is responsible for the global AIDS epidemic), spread between people.

The Yerkes staff members charged with finding a new home for their infected mangabeys were repeatedly frustrated. Two primate facilities in Texas declined, expressing worries about the animals' health status. Finally, in late 1998, Yerkes worked out an agreement with Wild Animal Orphanage, a large private sanctuary in San Antonio. Officials of the Texas Department of Health learned of the arrangement only after receiving an anonymous tip.

Because the sanctuary is open to the public, they worried that visitors might be put in jeopardy. Carol Asvestas, who operates the sanctuary with her husband, Ron, tried to quell officials' fears by spelling out the specifics of the deal: Yerkes had agreed to finance the construction of a building to house the mangabeys; the building would be on land outside the city limits; and the research center had agreed to train the sanctuary's two permanent employees, Carol Asvestas, and any future staff in Biosafety Level 2 protocols.

But the proposed transfer of the mangabeys raises some troubling questions. What happens if, in 5, 10, or 15 years, the sanctuary -- a nonprofit organization that solicits donations -- cannot raise enough money to stay in operation? Who will take responsibility for the infected mangabeys if they outlive the sanctuary operators, or if the place is closed?

There is another cause for concern: The Asvestases have a poor track record for security. In April 1997, an intruder's hand was mangled by a tiger when he and an accomplice broke into the sanctuary, possibly to steal a cougar. A month earlier, a tiger escaped from its cage, apparently after someone tampered with the door. And, in late 1997, a capuchin monkey escaped from its cage. Earlier this year, the Asvestases were charged with violating the Animal Welfare Act for failing to "maintain structurally sound housing facilities for nonhuman primates in good repair so as to protect the animals from injury, to contain the animals securely, and to restrict the entrance of other animals." They settled the case last August by agreeing to pay a $1,000 fine and spend $10,000 to repair cages.

More than 60 years after herpesvirus simiae was identified, little is known about the macaque-borne virus. What's certain is that rhesus, Japanese, pig-tailed, and virtually every other macaque species (there are more than a dozen) carry herpes B. There are other troubling aspects of the virus, which, according to medical literature, has killed about 20 people in the United States. A definitive diagnosis requires a test that only a few laboratories in the world can perform. What's more, monkey owners often don't report bites or scratches out of fear that their pets might be confiscated, so some of the numerous deaths caused by influenzalike or viral encephalitis symptoms may in fact be attributable to herpes B. Finally, it's possible that infected individuals may suffer only mild initial symptoms and that the virus may emerge later, long after the moment of exposure. If someone were to die from the virus, who would suspect a monkey-borne disease? "If no one is performing up-front testing for zoonotic diseases," says Dr. Stephanie Ostrowski of the CDC, referring to diseases that can be passed from animals to humans, "then it's not a question of whether there's going to be a disastrous incident, but when."

Given the threat herpes B poses, it seems reasonable to expect that zoos, biomedical researchers, and others who house, use, and display macaques take uncompromising precautions to ensure that these animals never leave institutional control. But in fact, during the past decade, many of these institutions, concerned about the liabilities associated with harboring B-virus-infected macaques, rushed en masse to get rid of them.

The official records of curators from zoos accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) show the distribution routes of potentially deadly primates:

From the Columbus Zoo: 11 Japanese macaques to Jim Fouts, a Kansas dealer who has sold surplus animals at auction.

From the Buffalo Zoo: Japanese macaques to Edward Novack, a New York dealer whose exotics are sold to breeders or advertised for sale in Animal Finders' Guide, a magazine that caters to the private pet trade.

From the Cincinnati Zoo, the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, and the Burnet Park Zoo in Syracuse: Japanese macaques to Northland Wildlife, a Minnesota-based animal dealer whose owner pleaded guilty in 1993 to a federal charge of illegally selling monkeys.

From the Los Angeles Zoo: Celebes macaques to Texas dealer Buddy Jordan, who sells animals at auctions, to private individuals, and to so-called sanctuaries that breed primates for the pet trade.

From Bucknell University: seven Japanese macaques from the university's laboratories to Animal Kingdom Zoo, in New Jersey, a privately run menagerie that doubles as a primate dealer.

And remarkably, from the California Regional Primate Research Center, an NIH-funded research center: eight Japanese macaques to Thomas Nichols, of Georgia, a well-known primate trafficker who was later indicted by the federal government for unlawfully importing and selling monkeys and was sentenced to a year in jail.

The dumping of zoo macaques has been so rampant that hundreds have seemingly vanished from institutions accredited by the AZA. In a landmark study, Ostrowski reviewed primate-transfer patterns from AZA institutions and documented about 200 Japanese macaques that are now -- in zoo terminology -- "lost to follow-up," along with 200 black macaques, 17 lion-tailed macaques, and other species of macaques for which there are no official records.

The pet trade is now teeming with macaques. They're for sale at exotic-animal auctions. They're moving from roadside menageries to dealers, and from there to private homes. Macaques are even being crossbred with other macaque species, creating hybrids whose capacities for B virus and SIV infections are unknown. In a recent issue of Animal Finders' Guide, five advertisers offered macaques, including a South Florida broker, and a Wisconsin dealer with pregnant snow macaques. This commerce in the potentially deadly monkeys has spooked public health officials, who have seen a rise in macaque bites. In a recent 10-month period, 13 such bites were reported to the Arizona Department of Health Services. None of the victims was infected.

Ringo is still a baby, but in two years, Parrott says, he'll be a full-grown male with big teeth and a surly attitude. Many macaques in private hands are about that same age, having come into popularity as pets only recently. Age brings on not only aggressiveness but sexual activity -- which experts believe triggers the shedding of herpes B. Many older, more aggressive, infected macaques coming into contact with greater numbers of unsuspecting humans is particularly troubling to Parrott and some of her colleagues. They're convinced that this will lead to more cases of herpes B.

The CDC could slow the private trade in macaques by enforcing the foreign quarantine regulations of the Public Health Service Act, which has prohibited the redistribution of imported primates and their progeny to the pet trade since 1975. But so far the CDC has not enforced those regulations.

In the Miami area, Parrott has seen macaques become especially popular with Latino families. "They're the ones I'm worried about," she says, "because, like many other pet owners, they have no education about what they've got."

James Beekman wanted his pet macaque back. so on April 23, 1998, he headed for the judicial complex in downtown Palm Beach to face the charges against him. In the end, he negotiated a plea bargain. Beekman not only pleaded guilty on three charges, he also agreed to forfeit his monkey and pay about $3,000 in court fees and restitution, including $500 for Catherine Brewster's medical bills. In addition, he was placed on probation for two years. Not long afterward, Ringo also got a reprieve. Parrott and her co-workers decided to adopt the young macaque.

Beekman earned his own form of absolution: A Florida fish and game officer agreed not to oppose Beekman's new wildlife-possession application. If, after three years, he has met the terms of the plea arrangement, Beekman -- like a growing number of macaque owners -- will be free to sleep with and eat off the same plate as a monkey, and expose himself and others to a killer virus.

Today's subject is the R Zoo
  • R Zoo was owned by Mark Schoebel
  • Evidence was gathered by US Fish & Wiildlife that revealed Schoebel supplied bears to the owners of an IL game farm who were charged with shooting the animals, dismembering, and decapitating them. They would pack the carcasses in dry ice and shipped via NY to Korea.
  • Every year he would farm out the babies to Reston Animal Park which led to the Zoos (AZA and others) for their crowd pleasing babies for the visitors to see.
  • He had a relationship with the Irvine Park Zoo in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
  • Schoebel would arrive at the Irvine Park Zoo to pick up some of the babies of the adults that he had on loan to this Zoo.
  • The US Fish and Wildlife declared for a 2 yr period R Zoo bought 74 bears but sold 132. Where did the other 58 bears come from.
  • Schoebel also owned a fur farm.
  • Schoebel contributed to can shoots whereas the animals are put in a 5 acre pen, hunted and killed.
  • Schoebel took delivery of 1400 prairie dogs which he sent to pet stores and Medical research labs.
  • He claimed he had 8,000 baby animals for sale.
  • He worked with the Racine Zoo and Duluth's Lake Superior Zoo which are both AZA Zoos.
  • The Wisconsin Zoo protected Schoebel because he would take their aging, unwanted surplus of animals.

  • They needed to dispose of unwanted monkeys, so a keeper for the zoo would drive them to an uncredited zoo near Camp David MD. This zoo who repeatedly failed inspection reports by Animal Welfare.
  • They retired it's herd of East Asian Silka deer 








who were sent off to a Virginia roadside zoo known for their frequent escapes, endless complaints of mistreatment, and carcasses disposed of in public trash cans.
  • They sent a brown Bear to William Vergis (Studio Animal Rentals) which he used for a westling bear act. (I personally had an encounter with Bill Vergis and I can only say this, a horrible horrible man). Shortly afterwards the USDA took his animal exhibitors license away and charging him with mistreatment of bears.
  • They also sold a rare Muntjac deer in 1977 (barking Deer) 







  • National Zoo Conservation and Research Center sent a couple of Oryx









to the International Animal Exchange, which were considered upstanding(?) by much of the zoo community. They then shipped them to Henry Hampton
  • 2 More African antelopes went to the Bamberger Ranch in Texas who ran an Oryx breeding program for the AZA (American Zoological Association). From there they were sent to a Florida Ranch where Wild Safari's "Surplus" were sent to die.

Alan Green and Animal Underworld Part 1

Alan spoke to the folks at the National Zoo in Washington who then referred him to look into the Reston Animal Park, previously known as pet-a-pet because there were rumors of mistreatment of the animals.
These are some of the key facts Alan found out-
  • One employee working there had been convicted of Animal Abuse for striking a huge Aldabra (photo below) with a 2X4 board







  • At the seasons end, the animals were trucked off to the animal auctions.
  • They let a black Angus (photo below) behind to die in the Zoo's dump which was found by a neighbor and a vet determined the cause of death was starvation.

She was then put to death for hurting a trainer. A Trainer? Why did she have a trainer at a zoo?

Introduction to Alan Green and Animal Underworld

Alan Green is a writer who has written the book titled "Animal Underworld". You can just imagine by the title of his book the horrors that not only has he seen, but also experienced and written about.

For those of you that really want the truth about what happens to our wonderful animals, this is the book to read. It will fill your heart with sadness, and anger and thoughts of "why?" and "how?" and amazement that these things go on everyday without our knowledge.

Because I use to own 2 chimpanzees I have meet some of the people mentioned in his book. I also have meet many that have surfaced later after the book had been published. A year or so ago I found out about Alan Greens book so I e-mailed him. I explained to him who I was, some of the things I had experienced and told Alan that if he ever decided to write a second book I would be more than glad to give him my experiences. Alan wrote me back and said that he had no interest in writing another book on this subject. I didn't understand at the time, though after reading a few hundred pages yesterday, I wouldn't want to go back there either, especially seeing everything he did and not being able to do anything about it.

Where Alan began;
Alan worked as an Ape-House volunteer at the National Zoo in Washington. He was on hand in 1993 for the construction of the Zoo's "Think Tank". The "Think Tank" was a novel exhibit that puts Orangutans in front of computer terminals in the hopes of gauging their intelligence. I personally use to go to this zoo about once a month. I always visited the "Think Tank" in hopes that I would be able to see this study. Not once did I see Orangutans in there.  I did however see Orangutans crossing over the public, feet above, on apparatus to get from one place to another. They had stopped when one Orangutan decided to visit the restaurant one day that was full of visitors. (see article below) I do see that they are back to doing it. Sure looks like a real nice place, but wait until you read Alan's book about them. What goes on behind the scenes is horrifying, not only with the National Zoo but Zoos all over.

A position came up for a caretaker, however, Alan was passed up because of seniority. From there he visited many places and gets quit an education about what happens to our animals.

In this section, I will give key facts that I have learned in his book, without going into detail. I would recommend this book to everyone. I don't think people know that this pure treasure is out there.

breakfast of kale, celery, carrots and green beans followed by his regular
arthritis medication. Then, apparently, boredom set in. So he did what any
other restless primate would do: He headed for the gift shop. He got there
by shimmying down a 45-foot tower at the National Zoo, climbing over an
electrified barrier and leaping into a flower bed. As staffers herded
astonished visitors into a nearby building, Junior took in Monkey Island
and an exhibit of prairie dogs before being tranquilized and returned to
captivity.

Helping Great Apes

What responsibilities come with being a human? We have great power as humans, and therefore we have a responsibility to protect those beings who cannot speak for themselves. PETA is the embodiment of this philosophy.

I became aware of captive chimpanzees decades ago when I learned that they were being used in the U.S. space program. Chimpanzee mothers were killed in Africa in order to capture babies for the program. Eventually, these government-sponsored hunting trips became less common as a captive-breeding program was established. But the use of chimpanzees in laboratories continued to grow throughout the 1980s.
In response to pressure from activists-and because chimpanzees aren't good models for human disease research-the breeding program ended in the 1990s. The retired chimpanzees were "rewarded" for their service to our country by being shipped to one of the worst biomedical laboratories in the nation-the now-defunct Coulston Labs in Alamogordo, New Mexico. For years, this laboratory was cited for violations of the minimal legal protections that were designed to protect its test subjects-the apes. Your tax dollars (and mine) funded the cruel experiments that were going on behind closed doors at this laboratory. Unfortunately, today our tax dollars continue to fund other laboratories where animals are subjected to some of the most painful and invasive experiments ever invented.

Laboratories are not the only places where apes are abused. PETA has effectively fought the use of great apes (mainly chimpanzees and orangutans) in the entertainment industry. Baby apes are torn away from their mothers and abused until their will is broken and they behave as their trainers wish. Chimpanzees are subjected to electric shocks and constant beatings with hammers, pipes, clubs, or broom handles in order to make the animals submissive and keep them in line. Many people who see a chimpanzee doing tricks at the circus would never suspect that the animal is abused because the abuse is hidden from the public.

My quest to make a difference for abused great apes led me to write a children's book called A Chimpanzee Tale. The book, which is narrated by Hoot the Chimpanzee, can be found in the PETA Catalog here. Written in rhyme, the story features factual information about chimpanzees. Part of the story takes place in Africa and shows children how chimpanzees in the wild live. The story then addresses captivity and advocacy and teaches children how to do what is right. Readers are introduced to sanctuary life, and Hoot thanks the children of the world for their help. The book includes an afterward, vocabulary words, and Web sites where children can learn about real chimpanzees.

As I write this, the Great Ape Protection Act is sitting before Congress. If this important bill is passed and signed into law, it will allow for approximately 500 chimpanzees who are being held in federal laboratories to be relocated to sanctuaries. But turning this act into a law depends on caring individuals like you. Please contact your representatives and senators and make sure that they sponsor this act. You can also add your name to PETA's online petition here. If enough of us take this step, real pressure may build to make this bill a reality.

I am forever grateful to PETA for all that it does for our animal friends. It is the most amazing organization on the planet, and it is an honor to be a member.

In search of our inner ape: An interview with Frans de Waal

In an exclusive interview for OUTROSPECTION, I speak to the renowned Dutch primatologist Frans de Waal about his new book, The Age of Empathy: Nature’s Lessons for a Kinder Society. De Waal, voted by Time Magazine as one of the 100 World’s Most Influential People Today, is Professor of Primate Behaviour at Emory University in the US. Author of numerous books on social cooperation in primates, he is famous for arguing that empathy is a natural trait in humans and many animal species.

Roman Krznaric: What is the central argument of your new book, The Age of Empathy, and why do you think empathy is such an important idea in today’s world?

Frans de Waal: The evolution of empathy has been an interest of mine since my 1996 book Good Natured. Since then, so many studies have been conducted both by others and by my own team on human and animal empathy that it is getting hard to keep up. The field is blooming, especially in human neuroscience, but increasingly also with regard to animals. There are now empathy studies on mice, monkeys, apes, elephants, et cetera. Since the general public knows little about these developments, they beg to be summarized, which is what I have set out to do in this book, exploring the origins of empathy through all disciplines, from human psychology to animal behavior, and from brain imaging to the evolution of sociality.

My second reason is a bit more political. I can’t stand the many references to biology by conservatives in this country, especially by those who do not really believe in evolution. They use biology as a convenient justification for their policies, saying that since nature is based on a “struggle for life” we ought to build our societies around selfishness and competition. They read into nature what they want to, and I feel it is my task to point out that they got it all wrong. There are many animals that survive through cooperation, and our own species in particular comes from a long line of ancestors dependent on each other. Empathy and solidarity are bred into us, so that our society’s design ought to reflect this side of the human species, too. I have nothing against a market economy, but there is more to life than making money.

Can you see yourself in the 'peaceful, hippie-like bonobo'?

My sensitivity in this regard goes back to the early debates, in the 1960s and 70s, about the aggressive instinct. No one denies that humans are aggressive—in fact, I consider us one of the most aggressive primates—yet the recent discovery of the Ardipithecus fossil should make everyone who believes we are born “killer apes” think twice. Ardipithecus is believed to be close to the split between humans and apes, yet was probably less aggressive than the current chimpanzee. Perhaps Ardipithecus was more like our other close relative, the bonobo. All of the nonsense we have been fed about being inherently aggressive and being predestined to wage war is open to question if in fact we descend from a peaceful, hippie-like bonobo.

Roman Krznaric: What is the single best piece of evidence you have come across showing that empathy – both in animals and humans – is a natural trait that has emerged as part of our evolutionary development?

We have collected thousands of observations of so-called consolation behavior in chimpanzees. As soon as one among them is distressed (has lost a fight, dropped out of a tree, encounters a snake) others will come over to provide reassurance. They embrace the distressed chimp or try to calm him or her with a kiss and grooming. This behavior is typical of chimps (and other apes), and is used in research on children as the main behavioral marker of “sympathetic concern.” I am a Darwinist and follow the assumption that if two closely related species show similar behavior under similar circumstances the psychology behind it is probably similar, too. This is the most parsimonious position, and means of course that if such behavior rests on empathy in the human child it does so, too, in the ape. In fact recent studies support the idea that consolation reduces stress in the recipient.

Experimental evidence is harder to collect but studies are beginning to do so. We conducted recently an experiment on spontaneous altruistic behavior, which in humans is usually explained as a product of empathy. In one experiment, we placed two capuchin monkeys side by side: separate, but in full view. One of them needed to barter with us with small plastic tokens. The critical test came when we offered a choice between two differently colored tokens with different meaning: one token was “selfish,” the other “prosocial.” If the bartering monkey picked the selfish token, it received a small piece of apple for returning it, but its partner got nothing. The prosocial token, on the other hand, rewarded both monkeys equally at the same time. The monkeys gradually began to prefer the prosocial token. The procedures were repeated many times with different pairs of monkeys and different sets of tokens, and the monkeys kept picking the prosocial option showing how much they care about each other’s welfare. This was not based on fear for possible repercussions, because we found that the most dominant monkeys (who have least to fear) were in fact the most generous.

Roman Krznaric: You have sometimes been accused of ‘overinterpreting’ the evidence. For instance, you have cited the example of a gorilla called Binti, who, when a three-year-old boy fell into her cage in the zoo, picked him up, comforted him, then carried him to a door where the zookeepers could remove him. You have argued that this is an instance of empathy. But critics have suggested it could well be evidence of some other trait, such as sympathy or pity. How do you respond?

Frans de Waal: Is this truly an alternative? Does anyone believe sympathy can be achieved without empathy? Empathy is the process of emotional resonance and perspective-taking that we use to be in tune with and understand others. How could one develop sympathy without it? For sympathy to be discriminating it needs to be based on what we think is happening with the other, which is based on empathy. For me all of these phenomena are continuous, from emotional contagion to concern for others to helping actions. It is all related.

But let’s face it, the case of Binti the gorilla cannot prove any of this. I use it as an illustration, just as I use many other illustrations, but the real work needs to be done through systematic research, either by observing hundreds of helping actions among primates (as has been done by several research teams) or by conducting experiments, in which we manipulate a situation in order to see how animals respond. Under the previous question I described such an experiment, and there are many others that have been published in the last few years.

The problem with experiments, though, is that they never concern very risky behavior. In the jargon of my field, they invariably concern “low-cost altruism.” No one is going to throw a human child in with the gorillas to see how they respond, and no one is going to push a baby elephant into a mud hole to see how the adults will save it. For this reason, we have no systematic evidence on animal risky helping behavior just as we don’t have such evidence for humans. We know that humans rescue others who are drowning or asleep in a burning building, but this is all anecdotal material similar the material that we have for animals. Anyone who criticizes the Binti story should keep in mind that we then also should discard all those cases of human heroism. It’s all anecdotal.

Roman Krznaric: As individual human beings, what can we do to develop our natural capacity to empathize?

Frans de Waal: It is instructive to see how political leaders have historically promoted the opposite of empathy (i.e. hatred). The process is called “dehumanization:” emphasize differences by depicting an entire group of people as “rats” or “cockroaches,” saying they are not human, thus making clear how much they differ from us. Hitler did this with the Jews.

Empathy is promoted by similarity and social closeness. Studies have shown this to be true for mice, for monkeys and for humans. The way to promote empathy is the opposite of dehumanization, so we could call it “humanization” because it emphasizes how similar others are to us. We stress that they look the same, feel the same, share the same interests. This helps us empathize.

Are Chimpanzees Kind?

Frans de Waal, director of the Living Links Center at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center in Atlanta, believes that it's just as natural to be nice as it is to be mean.

The scientific history of good nature in humans and other animals is a notably short one. Feelings like sympathy and concern, as well as acts of charity and nurture, have traditionally been ignored or dismissed.

Philosophy and religion, as well as science, have long suggested that caring and kindness do not come from our biology but instead are ways in which we overcome our biology: Niceness is a refinement. Contrast the ease with which aggression, domination and violence are attributed to our DNA.

But lately scientists, from biologists to psychologists — with de Waal and his casual eloquence in writing his new book The Age of Empathy at the forefront — have begun suggesting that nature is filled with compassion, too. This isn't a mere pendulum swing to warmth and cuddliness. Research on social animals — like elephants, dolphins, baboons, chimpanzees (deWaal's specialty) and even hyenas — has complicated what has for too long been a reductive picture.

These animals participate in dynamic societies made up of individuals, and their lives are replete with feelings, decisions and intentions rooted in biology yet elaborated in cooperative — and competitive — interaction. By comparing their worlds, with each other and with our own, de Waal explains, we can learn about the true anatomy of the social psyche. The result should deliver a jolt: Nature isn't so red in tooth and claw, and civilization may not be so neatly edifying. In fact, if we have a destructive impulse to watch out for, it may be our readiness to embrace the "civilized" view that deep down we're horrible.

De Waal, whose office sits perched atop the perimeter of a chimpanzee compound, has written extensively about the mutable hierarchies, loyal alliances and intensely complicated politics of chimpanzee life. Like other primatologists, he has also observed that many deeply felt human attitudes and ideas have suggestive precursors in chimpanzee behavior.

For example, it seems that ownership is a profoundly ancient right if you are a primate. In decades of observations at the Yerkes colony, de Waal has noted that if the chimpanzees are given shareable food, like watermelons, they will race to get their hands on it. This is because whichever chimpanzee gets the watermelon first, even the lowliest cur, will be respected as the owner of that morsel by the most dominant chimpanzee. Its mates may beg and whine for some of it, but no one will take the food away.

But possession is only part of the story. The thing about ownership, says de Waal, is that in nature it goes hand in hand with sharing. Only 20 minutes after the food is put out, every chimpanzee in the colony will have some.

"Owners share with their best buddies and family, who in turn share with their best buddies and family," he writes. Though there is some tussling, the result is more peaceful than not. The ownership/sharing principle is as true for killer whales and wolves as it is for chimpanzees, according to de Waal.

And as ownership goes with sharing, so does compromise with justice and, yes, bickering with peacekeeping. Fairness matters to social animals. If two monkeys perform the same task but are given different-size rewards, the monkey that is cheated acts cheated. It will refuse to do its job in the face of such inequity.

Humans, of course, are social animals, too, and de Waal argues that feeling and acting with empathy for one another are as automatic as aggression — part of our "bipolar nature." It's a good phrase that handily refutes the biology-is-all-bad idea, but with its suggestion of flip sides, it may miss what is most interesting about de Waal's findings, which is that they challenge our penchant for tidy dichotomies.

Some psychological traits are best understood as mosaiclike assemblages with seams that are invisible to us if all we do is look in the mirror. Take empathy. For humans, as comparative work with animals has helped to clarify, empathy has at least three layers.

The first is emotional contagion, the flush of emotion that runs involuntarily through a group of animals when something dramatic happens, like an eagle appearing above a group of monkeys or a man being punched on a crowded street. The next layer is feeling for others, our sympathetic response when we see another's predicament. This happens via the body, says de Waal, and such "body-mapping" has been shown again and again in animals as well as humans. For example, an old film of a chimpanzee on a stack of boxes reaching high for a banana shows another chimpanzee watching it, arms stretched up in sympathy.

The third part of empathy is what de Waal calls "targeted helping." It's the ability of onlookers to think their way into the mind of someone who needs help and, crucially, to give the kind of help that's required. If I see that you've dropped a heavy bag onto your foot, I'm going to try to move the bag.

There has lately been, as de Waal puts it, "an avalanche" of research on abilities like perspective taking in apes, monkeys, dogs and big-brained birds, and his book is packed with them. Joshua Plotnik, one of de Waal's colleagues in Thailand, witnessed one elephant try to push her dying friend into a standing position. When that didn't work, she stood supportively by her dying companion for days, even as humans tried to tempt her away with food.

If a chimpanzee has lost its child, other chimpanzees will spend a lot more time grooming it. De Waal watched one chimpanzee mother take great care helping her son with a broken wrist, even at the cost of her younger offspring. (Indeed, de Waal says that the bond between mother and child is the template for all our relationships, even romantic ones.)

Yet it is a mistake, given this evidence of natural empathy, to assume that the trait is a tidy bundle that animals either have or don't. Chimpanzees and humans, both apes, seem to have the same type of empathy, and undoubtedly this is because we are very closely related.

But monkeys — which are more distantly related to us (and to chimpanzees, for that matter) — are a different story. De Waal spent years searching for the last human dimension of empathy — consolation — in monkeys but was forced to conclude that they don't have it. Consider the baboon, an Old World monkey. They don't make up after fights, and they don't accommodate another baboon's injuries. One researcher showed that if baboons lose a family member to a predator (sometimes being forced to hear their kin's bones crunched), other baboons won't groom it more.

Even worse is baboon parenting. De Waal describes a band of baboons that crossed a flooded patch of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, only to look back and see that their offspring had been marooned on the patch of land they left behind. The water was too deep for the youngsters, who cried out in distress. The adult baboons occasionally answered their calls, but they never stepped into the water to go retrieve their stranded offspring in time. They couldn't see their own capacity to change the situation. They were themselves marooned in a painful psychic landscape.

There is no word for what that particularly baboon combination of emotional parts is. To us, it just looks like an excruciatingly deficient version of human empathy. But from the perspective of evolution, it is its own thing, a distinctive trait that we've never really identified before.

And this is what de Waal and scholars like him have begun to track. In doing so, they're building a universal catalog of emotions and ideas that is not human-centric, a body of work that describes what it feels like to be biological. The endeavor has majesty.

It also affirms a very unmajestic human experience: Our emotions are a mess. Of course they are — they are accumulated bits of psychic life thrown together over millions of years by evolution with no oversight or quality control about what they actually feel like. Just because we have a single word for a feeling or trait now doesn't mean that it is homogenous or discrete.

Developing an appreciation of this complexity, de Waal suggests, could actually combat one of the least helpful of human tendencies: the impulse — not innate but socially very contagious — to reductively assume our biology is bad.

As de Waal sees it, if we take that view — and the vogue of the "selfish gene" indicates we do — it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, for human behavior is decisively shaped by our sense of ourselves. By way of example, de Waal offers up Enron CEO Jeff Skilling, who was infamous for his brutal treatment of his own employees, never mind his exploitative approach to his company's shareholders and regulators.

Evidently inspired by Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene, he justified his actions with the belief that all people were ultimately motivated only by greed and fear. But Skilling had the science wrong, as does almost everyone else. Genes act in "self-preserving" ways, de Waal explains, but that has nothing to do with human behavior. Dawkins never meant that selfish genes build selfish people.

Competing genes build complicated people, who aren't just instinctively cruel but also caring and curious. Which is why you are still wondering what happened to those poor baby baboons — and why we should hope de Waal continues to keep a wise eye on his chimps.

Jane Goodall Promotes Hope For a Better Planet

Renowned British primatologist Jane Goodall spent almost

half a century studying wild chimpanzees in Gombe National

Park in Tanzania. Her ground-breaking discoveries in that

tiny preserve of African forest have contributed much of what

we know today about the social behavior of chimpanzees,

mankind's closest animal relatives.

Today, the 75-year old scientist leaves the field work to

others. She now devotes her time to the foundation she

established to promote wildlife conservation and public

education. That's also the focus of her new book,

Hope for Animals and Their World, which highlights the

stories of extraordinary people who have managed

to bring endangered species back from the brink of extinction.

can remember. Even before she could talk, she says she was

"observing earthworms, reading Dr. Doolittle books and

wanting to learn the language of animals."

under the guidance of the renowned anthropologist and

paleontologist, the late Dr. Louis Leakey.

One of the most significant discoveries that emerged from

Goodall's findings was that chimpanzees use – and make – tools.

"It was thought that only humans did this and that this

set us apart from the rest of the animal kingdom," she says.

Over time she, and her team of researchers, revealed

that chimps share other behavioral traits with humans

as well, "like the long-term supportive, affection bond

between family members." Goodall says chimpanzees

can live to be more than 50 years old and these bonds

"can last throughout life."

A global organization takes root

Goodall's affection for these creatures, and her desire

to protect them from human encroachments, inspired

her in 1977 to found the Jane Goodall Institute. With

offices in 22 countries, its global mission is to protect

chimpanzees and their habitats.

But Goodall notes that despite all the research and

ambitious conservation efforts, the number of wild

chimpanzees in Africa has continued to decline.

"When I began there were somewhere between

one and two million. And now, 300,000 maximum,"

she says.

Habitat loss just one factor in declining numbers of chimps

Goodall says the primary reason for the shrinking

chimp population, like most endangered species,

is the destruction of their habitat.

And one way to stop that destruction she says, is by

addressing the needs of the people living near those

precious habitats. "How could you try to save the

chimpanzees in their little oasis of fertile forest, when

outside [it] you have more people living than the land

can support, population growth from normal means and

also refugees?" she says.

One of the other problems facing the chimp population

is the growing demand for their meat says Goodall. In

the old days no hunter would shoot a female with a

baby because they simply wouldn't, she says, but now,

"hunters will shoot anything; they will shoot elephants,

gorillas, antelopes, pigs, birds even, and bats; anything

that can be cut up and smoked," she says.

Conservation programs for communities and children

In 1994 Goodall started the TACARE (Take Care)

program. The development effort partners with local

villagers in 24 communities to create sustainable

income-generating opportunities while promoting

conservation goals. "Because the villagers understand

that we care about them as well as the chimpanzees,

it's beginning to come around," she says.

Goodall believes that if long-term conservation is to

work, it has to involve young people. So in 1990, the

Goodall Institute created Roots & Shoots. The program

helps young people from pre-school through university

identify problems in their communities and take action

to solve them.

"Every group chooses three kinds of projects to make

the world a better place," she says, "one to help people,

one to help animals including dogs and cats and pigs,

and one to help the environment that we all share," she says.
"Young people, when informed and empowered, when

they realize that what they do truly makes a difference,

can indeed change the world. And they are changing it

Hope for animals on the brink of extinction

Dr. Goodall writes about TACARE (Take Care) and

her other conservation efforts in her new book, Hope for

Animals and Their World. But the book focuses on the

inspiring stories of dozens of field biologists who have

managed to rescue endangered species from the brink

of extinction, despite tremendous obstacles.

"One of the reasons I wanted to do this book was that

there is so much doom and gloom - and quite rightly,"

Goodall says. "We have made a horrible mess of the

planet, no question, but at the same time, there are all

these extraordinary success stories." She says she

wanted to write about the "amazing people doing

amazing work" that led to those successes.

Saving the golden lion tamarin

One of those people is Dr. Leonardo Coimbra-Filho of

the Rio de Janeiro Primate Center who is often called

the father of primatology in Brazil. Together with other

conservationists, he created a captive breeding program

that has saved the golden lion tamarin, the most

endangered of all New World primates.

Goodall says she is thrilled about the success of the

program because so many of the monkeys have been

re-introduced back into the wild. "Many of them are

now living completely free of any scientific observation.

They've made it!"

Indeed, having been successfully released into the

forests of Brazil, the golden lion tamarins are the only

primate species to have been downlisted from critically

endangered to endangered on the IUCN [International

Union for Conservation of Nature] Red List of

Threatened Species.

Making a Difference

Nearly 50 years after she began her work, Jane Goodall

remains an energetic champion for the welfare of the

world's wild animals. Appointed in 2002 by the United

Nations as one of its messengers of peace, she travels the

globe nearly 300 days a year, spreading her message of

hope and positive change.

"These are the stories that give me hope," Jane Goodall






"Every single day we impact the world around us,"

she says. "If we would just think about the consequences

of the little choices we make; what we eat, wear, buy,

how we interact with people, animals, the environment,

then we start making small changes and that can lead

to the huge change that we must have."

Positive change, says Goodall, has to start within

ourselves, so we can better understand – and appreciate

– the deep connection between us and the natural world.

The Age Of Empathy, Animal Behaviour

It was all a bit confusing. When President Barack Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, he declared her capacity for "empathy" to be among her most vital and valuable qualities. Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl, for his part, praised Ms. Sotomayor's "sense of compassion." Her opponents, meanwhile, like the conservative analyst Diana Schaub, argued that "pity" had no place in the courtroom. For Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions, it was "sympathy" that didn't belong there.

Only within a charged debate over a judicial nominee could terms like empathy, compassion, sympathy and pity get bandied about quite so interchangeably. In normal life, the terms carry profoundly different meanings, and happily so: It says something about the core of our humanity that mankind possesses such a diverse palette of fellow feeling.

One way of grasping the range of such feeling is to view our world from the perspective of the animal kingdom. For such an undertaking there are few better guides than Frans de Waal, a biologist at Emory University who studies altruistic behavior among primates. In "The Age of Empathy," Mr. de Waal takes aim at all those economists and biologists who, over the centuries, have argued that human beings are essentially a selfish, cut-throat species, interested in nothing but individual survival and success.

Mr. de Waal makes his case indirectly, offering evidence not of human but of animal altruism—Bengal tigers that nurse piglets, bonobo apes that help wounded birds to fly, seals that rescue drowning dogs—and then asks rhetorically: If animals are so innately caring, can humans be any less so? Mr. de Waal's stories of animal behavior are nothing short of fascinating. Who would expect that a rhesus monkey will forgo the opportunity for food if pulling the chain that delivers it will electrically shock a companion? Mr. de Waal is perfectly happy to agree with the philosopher Thomas Hobbes that "man is wolf to man," as long as we remember that wolves are creatures who comfort one another after outbreaks of aggression.

Such stories from the animal kingdom may well imply that we humans are naturally more altruistic than we think. But Mr. de Waal does not stop there. He sees a deep equivalence between humanity's fellow feeling and the animal version. "The story of empathy," he writes—referring to the emotional awareness of how one would feel in a fellow creature's situation—"means that even our most thoughtful reactions to others share core processes with the reactions of . . . elephants, dogs and rodents."

Is this so? A chimp may exhibit empathy by licking another's chimp's wounds, but surely humankind's "most thoughtful reactions" go well beyond this. Like debaters rating a judicial nominee, Mr. de Waal at times blurs the distinction between empathy and other, more evolved, reactions to the distress of others.

Imagine that your old college roommate recently lost $50 million with Bernie Madoff. If you happen to be a poet who has renounced all material pursuits, you might have difficulty summoning up much empathy. To feel what your friend feels, you're going to have to bring to mind something that causes you as much pain as the lost millions causes him: say, having the poem you've been working on for 10 years rejected by the New Yorker. There is a word for this strategy, whereby we feel what another feels not by imagining ourselves in his situation but by imagining ourselves in circumstances that might produce his feelings. The word is "compassion."

Compassion gets a bad rap because it is redolent of sentimentality or the triteness of the method actor who, in order to choke up for a scene when his wife leaves him, recalls the time when his school friends stuffed him in his locker. Yet compassion expands humankind's emotional reach. Kuni, the bonobo ape that spread a wounded bird's wings and sent it flying, might have had a rudimentary cognitive sense of what birds are supposed to do. But there is no reason to believe that Kuni is imagining how she would feel if she were no longer able to swing from trees.

Empathy and compassion do share one quality, though. In both cases, what we are responding to are our own painful feelings or difficult situations, which happen to have been brought to mind by our exposure to those of another. But human beings are also capable of sympathy and pity—two states of mind that are considerably more impressive and, for the purposes of comparing humans and other primates, more distinctive.

When we sympathize with someone anguishing over the loss of $50 million, we do not feel his pain as if it were our own. Yet we are still able to summon up a response of concern and care. Pity is like sympathy, except that it responds not to the distraught feelings of someone else but to his dire situation. Thus we can pity someone who, though in a dire situation, is too deluded to feel distraught (which is why Mr. T said "I pity the fool," not "I sympathize with the fool"). With pity, too, we are capable of responding with care and concern without having to imagine ourselves in similar circumstances.

Mr. de Waal offers no conclusive argument that animals are capable of shifting their focus in such a way: to the feelings and situations of others and away from their own. So, yes, a chimpanzee that licks another's wounds could, as Mr. de Waal says, be empathizing: sensing that it could be he who is in his companion's place. But by suggesting that human fellow feeling is merely a variant of this innate animal response—by claiming that "leveling waves" are effacing the differences between humans and animals—Mr. de Waal goes too far. In his quest to rescue humankind from the charge of innate selfishness, he isn't generous enough: He sells us short.

Frans de Waal Writes About The Better Side of Chimpanzees, The Age Of Empathy

A pioneer in primate studies, Frans de Waal sees our better side in chimps, especially our capacity for empathy. In his research, Dr. de Waal has gathered ample evidence that our ability to identify with another's distress -- a catalyst for compassion and charity -- has deep roots in the origin of our species. It is a view independently reinforced by recent biomedical studies showing that our brains are built to feel another's pain.

Like tuning forks, we reflexively respond to others' moods. We can weep at the plight of people we have never met or, spellbound by fiction, become caught up in the lives of people who never existed. Indeed, we may be hard-wired for empathy, University of Chicago researchers who studied children's neural responses to others reported last year. "It starts on day one, when a baby cries because it hears another baby cry," says Dr. de Waal.

In his new book -- "The Age of Empathy" -- Dr. de Waal, director of Living Links Center at Emory University's Yerkes National Primate Research Center in Atlanta, traces the origins of our ability to put ourselves in another's place. Drawing on his experiments and studies by other animal behaviorists, he highlights how chimpanzees and other primates console each other, prefer to share, and nurse the injured. There are no fossils of feelings, but as our closest living relatives, Dr. de Waal believes these primates are reminders of empathy's antiquity.

Despite our genetic similarity to chimpanzees, evolution has taken us on different paths since our ancestors diverged more than six million years or so ago. Our brains today are quite unlike a chimp's in size, organization and cellular complexity. A chimp's brain weighs as much as a can of baked beans -- only a quarter the average human weight. Our cerebral cortex, the brain's most highly evolved region, is three times larger than a chimp's. Our mind's emotional intelligence requires all that extra gray matter. And some neuroscientists consider empathy a uniquely human virtue.

Even so, Dr. de Waal contends that empathy, sympathy and compassion are traits shared by every species with a rudimentary capacity for self-awareness. While chimps can be combative and violent, they more often comfort and help each other. Capuchin monkeys enjoy giving to others. Elephants and dolphins aid companions in need. Whales can display something akin to gratitude. Even mice appear to have an ability to sense what their cage-mates are experiencing, says a recent study by researchers at McGill University.

"The old remains present in the new," Dr. de Waal says. "This is relevant to the story of empathy because it means that even our most thoughtful reactions to others share core processes with the reactions of young children, other primates, elephants, dogs and rodents."

"All mammals have some degree of it, and I think the origin is in maternal care," Dr. de Waal says. "I think mammals need a mechanism like this because a female needs to be very sensitive to emotional signals that come from offspring. We just have a more powerful imagination and that amplifies our capacity for empathy."

Empathy draws us into the life of another's mind. Synapses fire to marshal sensory cues, muster memories and weave intuitions that our conscious minds could never articulate. As a visceral response to others, empathy can manifest in unexpected ways -- through contagious yawning, for instance.

Most people can't help but yawn reflexively when someone else starts doing it first. No one knows why, but researchers at the State University of New York recently learned that people better able to identify with another's state of mind also yawn more readily in response to others. Children with autism -- a condition characterized by an inability to interact socially -- don't catch yawns, scientists at the University of London's Birkbeck College reported in 2007.

But monkeys do. Chimpanzees will yawn when shown a computer animation of another monkey yawning, Dr. de Waal and his colleagues reported earlier this month in the Proce.

Are Humans Actually Selfish?

Gordon Gekko got it wrong. In his new book The Age of Empathy: Nature's Lessons for a Kinder Society, primatologist Frans de Waal uses a variety of studies on empathy in animals to debunk the idea that humans are competitive to the core. He talked to TIME about contagious yawning, why we share and Bernie Madoff.

How do you define empathy?
Empathy is sometimes defined by psychologists as some sort of high-level cognitive feat where you imagine how somebody else feels or how you would feel in their situation. But my definition is more focused on the whole of empathy, and that includes emotions. If you are sad and crying, it's not just that I try to imagine how you feel. But I feel for you and I feel with you. (Read what makes us moral.)

You explain in the book that empathy really starts with our bodies: running together, laughing together, yawning together. So yawning really is contagious?
Yeah. Dogs catch yawns from their owners. Chimpanzees yawn [in response to those] that we show them. Yawn contagion is very interesting because it's a very deep bodily connection between humans or between animals. Humans who have problems with empathy, such as autistic children, don't have yawn contagion. It's either because they don't pay attention to the yawns of others or they're not affected by them. There's an example in the book where you talk about apes sharing food as a demonstration of empathy. What's in it for the apes who already have food — why do they choose to give it away?
In biology, we usually make a sharp distinction between why things evolved and why animals do things. For example, sex evolved for reproduction. But if you ask people why they have sex, reproduction is not always mentioned. So there's a separation between why the behavior evolved and why the actors actually engage in it. The same is true for altruistic tendencies. You share food with your kin; you share food with individuals who may repay the favor. So the sharing behavior evolved for self-interested reasons. But that doesn't mean that the individual actor, at the moment that he does it, is thinking of the potential benefits.

Review of The Age of Empathy: Nature's Lessons for a Kinder Society

As part of the series of reposts leading up to my review of Frans de Waal's newest book The Age of Empathy: Nature's Lessons for a Kinder Society I present the third of three pieces that appeared after Ian Parker's 2007 article "Swingers" appeared in The New Yorker.


In my earlier pieces "Bonobo (Re)Visions" as well as "Bonobos and the Politics of Human Nature" I pointed out how conservative pundits were eager to jump on any criticism of this species because it fit their ideology of nature as "red in tooth and claw" (to use the line from Tennyson). In his response in eSkeptic Frans de Waal points out that conservative pundits picked up on The New Yorker article in order to, following Parker's phrase, "use the species as a stick to beat" their ideological drum. However, I don't believe Parker had any similar motivations in writing his article. Rather, as de Waal emphasizes, Parker was merely "sexing up" his article in order to raise a little controversy.

Parker presented his trip as a fact-finding mission that had unearthed revolutionary new insights. His message was that bonobos are killer apes, just like their cousins, the chimpanzees. The animal kingdom remained "red in tooth and claw," as it ought to be.

Yet, the most striking cases of bonobo aggression that he reported have been known for decades, and actually didn't come from the natural habitat, even less from first-hand observation by our brave explorer.

Challenging a widely held view, even without anything dramatically new to report, is a standard journalistic hook in order to generate audience interest. Whether Parker intentionally chose this tactic or whether it just seemed to be the most exciting way to tell the story isn't all that important. It was a beautifully written piece on the difficulties of fieldwork which ultimately contained flaws about bonobo social behavior.

Parker quotes primatologists Gottfried Hohmann and Craig Stanford (two researchers I greatly respect) in such a way that it implies de Waal has been wrong in his interpretations since he's never done field work himself. Stanford had some of the most critical statements but, since he's never done fieldwork with bonobos either, these aren't as relevant as Hohmann's. However, while Hohmann has published some exciting field results showing that bonobo behavior could be more flexible than previously thought, his findings do not contradict de Waal's interpretations.

For example, Parker takes issue with de Waal's statement that:

"Who could have imagined a close relative of ours in which female alliances intimidate males, sexual behavior is as rich as ours, different groups do not fight but mingle, mothers take on a central role, and the greatest intellectual achievement is not tool use but sensitivity to others?"

Taking each point individually, compare that with the following statements from Hohmann's publications:

1. Female alliances intimidate males: "Aggression by males against females was rare and was almost never followed by mating between aggressor and target. Female aggression against males occurred frequently but appeared to be independent of mating behaviour." Behaviour (2002).

2. Sexual behavior is as rich as ours: "Why females of the two Pan species differ in their [genito-genital] displays of social status remains a challenge for future research. The finding that bonobos perform this behaviour so regularly indicates that social status is an important issue for the females of this species. Because of their frequent use, dyadic performance, spatial variability and behavioural plasticity, we suggest that genital contacts can be used to investigate the quality and dynamics of social relationships among female bonobos." Animal Behavior (2000).

3. Different groups do not fight but mingle: "Bonobos show an opportunistic and promiscuous mating behaviour, even with mates from outside the community." Proceedings: Biological Sciences (1999). Also see Primates (2001) for a short communication involving tolerance of strangers.

4. Mothers take on a central role: "The lasting bonds between mothers and sons may be a substitute for male coalitions serving rank acquisition in chimpanzees." Behaviour (1999).

Other than de Waal's final comment about intellectual achievement (which is a value judgment, even though bonobo empathy has been shown to be greater than chimpanzees) the two researchers don't differ substantially on these points. Parker didn't include this common ground but opted to create a wedge between Hohmann and de Waal. This opened the door for political pundits to declare victory that the bonobo "myth" had been disproved (which shows what standard of evidence they embrace).

However, it's important to point out that new field data has provided more complexity to the social lives of bonobos (and of chimpanzees as well). The excellent book Behavioural Diversity in Chimpanzees and Bonobos (of which Hohmann was a co-editor) shows how different environmental conditions bring out different sides to these species. An in depth review of this book can be found here.

Fortunately, and with all criticism aside, any discussion about bonobos can only aid in the conservation of this critically endangered species as it will activate their strongest base of supporters and bring them to the attention of others who may have never known there was more than one "chimpanzee." I also salute Parker's dedication for taking such an arduous journey to watch bonobos personally, as brief as that may have been.

Currently Gottfried Hohmann and Frances White are conducting field work in the region (I conducted an interview with Dr. White earlier about bonobo behavior). It will be exciting to learn what new insights are discovered about our evolutionary cousins.
