"NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - An attorney for the owner of a chimpanzee that nearly killed a Connecticut woman says the animal never showed signs of violence before the attack.
Robert Golger, attorney for Sandra Herold, said the victim, Charla Nash, had interacted with the pet chimpanzee in the past without incident. He also said the city and state did not see the chimpanzee as a threat to anyone.
Nash is at Ohio's Cleveland Clinic and is listed in critical, but stable condition. She lost her eyesight, hands, nose, lips and eyelids in the Feb. 16 attack in Stamford. The 200-pound chimp was shot and killed by police.
Nash's family has filed a lawsuit against Herold seeking $50 million in damages. Their attorney rejected Golger's comments."
