Bartlett is sponsoring a bill to protect chimpanzees from invasive research. He was also selected by the humane society for sponsoring a bill in 2007 to increase the penalties for animal fighting.
He was one of 81 lawmakers honored as prime sponsors of pro-animal legislation by the society and the Humane Society Legislative Fund.
The Great Ape Protection Act would phase out the use of chimpanzees in invasive research in the U.S., retire about 500 federally owned chimpanzees to sanctuaries, and make a law prohibiting the National Institutes of Health from breeding federally owned chimpanzees."
