Tua, shown here as a baby in a photo provided by the Philadelphia Zoo, has given birth to a baby orangutan of her own this morning, according to the zoo.
The Philadelphia Zoo announced in a statement this afternoon that Tua, its 16-year-old Sumatran orangutan, gave birth to a baby, the first orangutan born at its new PECO Primate Reserve.
The zoo reports that both mother and baby are doing well. Baby orangutans, according to the zoo, are essentially helpless, like human babies. Since the first 48 hours of the primate's life are most crucial, zoo staff are keeping a close eye on both mother and baby, who remain together.
No word from the zoo yet on when Tua and her baby will make their debut.Source
