Rich and Famous Animals

A mansion-dwelling dog, a multi-millionaire chimpanzee and the canine star of Frasier have all made it into Petplan's 2009 Pet Rich List.

The pet insurance provider said the top dog in this year's rundown of the rich and furry is Gunther IV, an Alsatian with an estimated fortune of £224.9m.

This property-owning pooch inherited his fortune from his father, Gunther III, who received millions in the will of German aristocrat Countess Karlotta Libenstein.

In addition to owning Madonna's Miami mansion and a villa in the Bahamas, Gunther IV has his own butler, a custom-built swimming pool and a daily menu that includes steak and caviar.

Kalu the chimpanzee took second place on the list with a fortune of £53m. She inherited her cash from the daughter of the Countess of Kenmore, Patricia O'Neill.

Petplan's Alison Andrew said the list "highlights the lengths that some owners go to provide for their furry friends".

Luckily, she added, getting the best pet insurance does not have to break the bank.

Other entrants on the 2009 Pets Rich List include Moose, better known as Eddie the dog in Frasier, Free Willy star Keiko the killer whale and Oprah Winfrey's dogs, who stand to inherit £30m from the talk show queen.
