It is the first time that KCB, which has been operational in Rwanda for less than a year, sponsors an event, and it is no coincidence that it is in sports. "At KCB we have a culture of sponsoring sporting events," said Maurice Toroitich, the Managing Director of KCB.
Although KCB is associated with sponsoring motorsport - it supports both the Safari and Pearl of Africa rallies - it has also ventured into other disciplines. In Kenya, for example, the bank has volleyball and football teams, the former being the current Kenya's national champions.According to Toroitich, apart from contributing financially to the Mountain Gorilla rally, the bank will also foot the bill of broadcasting the event on DSTV, and will also use the event for its own purposes.
"During the rally we will also engage in some corporate social activities," he said. "In the Eastern province we will donate equipment and services to schools, while at the same time using the occasion to launch some of our new branches such as Remera and Kimironko."
Through the sponsoring of the rally, KCB looks to increase awareness of its brand to a vast majority of Rwandans. "I think it will be a win-win situation for both the bank and the rallying event," Toroitich observed.
According to Dismas Kambanda, the chairman of the Rwanda Automobile Club, the sponsorship of KCB is the biggest so far for this year's event. He pointed out that the budget of 2009 event is US$ 174,000 and that KCB has provided more than a quarter of the budget.
"KCB sponsorship should act as an example to other companies to facilitate not only motorsport but also other sporting activities," Kambanda said.
