Rory Coleman, 45, of Mansfield, is doing the 143 mile run to raise money for the Gorilla Organisation.
He set off from Go Ape in Sherwood Forest on Tuesday but got stopped by police as he ran alongside a dual carriageway in Leicester.
He said officers told him they had received several calls from the public saying they had seen a gorilla on the loose.
He told a national newspaper: "I told them I'd come quietly as long as they'd give me a banana!"
The officers gave him a £10 donation and sent him on his way.
