Russian space chiefs want to send a monkey to Mars.
Although it will be looked after by a robot on the mission, the decision is sure to outrage animal rights groups.
The Russians will first experiment with a groundbased capsule. The goal is to put men on Mars and is likely to signal a new space race.
Zurab Mikvabia, director of the Institute of Experimental Pathology and Therapy in Georgia, admitted: "We have plans to return to space."
The Soviet Union last sent two monkeys into space in 1987 for medical tests.
