PETA Wants Grant Money for Experiments To Be Given Back

I totally agree with Kathy Guillermo.

Story-

An animal rights group is demanding that the National Institutes of Health take back grant money from the University of Kansas Medical Center.

PETA said in a release Wednesday that it’s making the demand after revelations that the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited KU Med for deficiencies in its Lab Animal Research facilities.

KU Med said Monday that it had spent $700,000 on renovations to the facilities and recruited a Princeton University scientist for a newly created position as executive director of the lab, in response to the USDA inspection.

A KU Med spokeswoman could not comment immediately because she was unaware of the PETA demand.

PETA said in the release that KU Med had been cited for more than 160 violations of federal animal protection laws between August 2008 and June, and it wants the NIH to make KU Med return “thousands of dollars” in federal grant money that was used for the violating experiments. Guidelines for grants from the NIH don’t allow public funds to be used for animal experiments that breach federal regulations, the release said.

“According to USDA inspectors, animals at KUMC were regularly left to suffer from painful illnesses and invasive surgeries without adequate veterinary care, inadequately trained staff members were allowed to handle animals ... and experimenters repeatedly failed to consider modern alternatives to animal use as required by law,” the release said.

Kathy Guillermo, PETA’s director of laboratory investigations, said in the release that public money was being “squandered on crude and cruel experiments that have no relevance to human health.”
