OLDSMAR, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A Safety Harbor firefighter on Wednesday caught video of an escaped monkey leaping through an apartment complex before it ran into a wooded area, and authorities called off the search.
The monkey was spotted at the Sabal Palms apartments at 1355 Bay Harbor Drive in Oldsmar.
The monkey has been on the loose since early November. Several people, including a Hillsborough County deputy, reported seeing the animal in the Westchase area of Tampa late last Friday.
Deputies searched a wooded area in 11700 block of Cypress Crest Circle, by ground and helicopter, even grabbing binoculars for a closer look, but the monkey was no where to be found.A Tampa resident spotted a monkey up in a tree on Nov. 11. After several hours, Florida Fish and Wildlife officers confirmed it was a Macaque monkey but were unable to capture it. There's still no word on where the monkey came from.
This week, someone saw it swinging through trees and rooftops in the complex and called authorities. It is approximately 30 pounds and wildlife officers say it may be aggressive and dangerous. They say anyone who spots it should call police.
